Brazil edges out USA in the Olympic gold medal match – Volleyball News
Women’s teams from Brazil and USA contested their skills in the final match of the London Olympic volleyball tournament this past Saturday at the Earls Court. The former exhibited a better performance and clinched success in the influential match. Brazil
sent 11-25, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-17 on board to claim 3-1 victory. Around 13,500 spectators attended the match at Earls Court in London.
Americans started out on a very good note and produced powerful serves. They followed a great plan and promptly jumped to a strong lead, while Brazil trailed behind. US players scored points with simple touch of their hands. USA continued with success and
quickly stretched out the gap of points. Brazilian team progressed at snail’s pace and suffered too many set-backs. On contrary, the Americans enjoyed a great rhythm and tone, which allowed them to finish the first set with big margin of 14 points.
Following a wonderful start in the match, US team could not carry the momentum in the second set. Brazil came up with an improved game plan and secured second set at 25-17. Success in set-2 enabled Brazilian squad to recover from the shock of previous loss
and the team got its full form back.
Brazil remained remarkably consistent in the next two sets and eventually cruised past to 3-1 victory.
Jaqueline Carvalho gave out one of the best performances in London and it totally benefitted the team. She charted 18 points and emerged as the top-scorer of the match. Her teammates Sheilla Castro and Fabiana Claudino added 15 and 14 points respectively,
while Fernanda Rodrigues also went into double digits with 12 points. US team was paced by Logan Tom and Destinee Hooker, who chipped in 14 points apiece.
“This is a wonderful feeling, it’s amazing. Last year we lost every match against the USA. For me, the USA were the favorites before this match. We played well tactically. After the first set we played really wonderful. We were serving well. We didn’t make
mistakes on reception,” said Italy’s Coach Jose Guimaraes after the gold medal victory.
His American counterpart McCutcheon stated: “This is the end of the road for me in the international arena. It’s been a privilege, but it’s the end of a chapter. If they need me (for Rio 2016 Olympic Games), I’ll always be here. USA Volleyball is in my blood.
If I can be a scout or help, I’ll do it.”
