Brazil falls to Poland in five-set thriller – Volleyball news
The Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Canada hosted a thrilling match on Friday, which featured two top-notch rivals of the volleyball world.
Brazil clashed with Poland in the second match of Pool B and fought a head-to-head battle. After an incredibly close competition, Poland claimed 3-2 victory over Brazil. Poles started off well and captured the first two sets by posting 25-22 and 27-25 on
board.
However, Brazil came up with improved performance and captured the next two set, 27-25 and 25-22. In the fifth and final set of the match, Poland scored 15-12 and settled for match victory. More than 7,000 spectators witnessed the match.
Wallace de Souza put up a valiant effort for Brazil and added match-high 26 points but could not lead his team to success. Poland, on the other hand, did not have the top-scorer but managed to make a difference with 20 points of Zbigniew Bartman.
Brazil started off slow and gave out too many points in the early few minutes. That was when Poland built a solid base to dominate the archrivals. Polish hitters produced speed bombs, while middle-blockers save many crucial points. Brazil put up a good effort
and managed to shorten the gap of points but lost opening stanza with three points (22-25).
After dropping the first set, Brazil came up with strong offence in the second set. They regrouped and pushed the Poles behind. Poland trailed behind at the first technical timeout but gradually worked up its position on the scoreboard. They came from behind
and sent Brazil to another set loss by posting 27-25 on board.
Brazil was in dire need to come out of the blues. However, Poland was not ready to slow down. Despite using different tactics, the Brazilian trailed behind. Eventually, the hard work paid off and Brazil rallied 7-2 runs to tie the score at 22-all. Thereafter
things changed for Brazil and team clawed its way to third-set win 27-25.
Fourth set also came successful for Brazil, while Poland could not resist the tie of game score at 2-2.
It seemed as if Brazil had got its full form back but resilient Poland gave the final shot in fifth set and stole the show. Poland secured the final set (15-12) and earned the winning status.
Brazilian coach Bernardo Rezende shared his thoughts after the match. He said, “There was a lot of spirit on the court. For us, it was a chance to see where we are and now we need to forget about this match and focus on Canada. They are improving every year
and have a great coach. They had a big win today and they’ll be full of confidence.”
