Brazil heads for Volleyball final at the Pan American Games
The Brazilians national men’s volleyball team took pn Argentinea on Friday, October 28 in the semi-fianl of the Pan American Games that is currently being conducted in Guadalajara, Mexico. The four set must-win match saw the defending and world champions
able to earn a ticket into the final of the tournament.
The first set of the match was the most competitive as the two teams battled long and hard for a first set win. No one was sure where the tables would turn until the very end when the Argentineans successfully won the opening set. The loss of the first set
did not sit well with the Brazilians and they were able to come out strong in the second and bag themselves a win. With the match equalised, the Brazilians were able to perform better in the third set and take the lead. Even though the Argentineans kept trailing
behind, they were unable to overtake the Brazilians. As a result, Brazil bagged itself a win in the third set. By the time that the fourth set started, the Brazilians were in top form while the Argentineans were only making a half hearted effort in the game.
Therefore, Brazil was able to win the fourth set as well as the match at the following final set scores: 26-28, 27-25, 25-22 and 25-15.
The coach of the Brazilian team Rubinho Leonaldo made the following comments at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “It was a very tough match as we expected. Good services and technical strength, but at the same
time we had some variations. We could control the match and our players could get the balance.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Argentinean squad, Javier Weber, expressed himself in the following manner: “Argentina had a good match on the first two sets. We tried to get the best from Brazil’s anxiety. They had a very powerful attack and that makes
things difficult. We fell down on the fourth set, but I am satisfied with the performance of my team.”
The Brazilians were able to outperform the Argentineans in terms of blocks. The superior blocking skills of the Brazilians made them score a total of 8 points in the entire match. Other than that, the number of errors that were committed by the Brazilian
squad was less than that of the Argentineans. Argentina made 37 unforced errors while the Brazilians were able to fall just short at 36 of them.
The player that scored the most number of points was Brazil's Wallace de Souza as he registered 20 points.
