Brazil keeping hopes alive for semi-finals after 3-2 win: Volleyball updates
World No. 1, Brazil, posted a 3-2 (25-17, 24-26, 27-29, 25-22, and 15-7) win over Poland in their second match of the second round on Wednesday, August 17. The crowded Baskent Sports Arena in Turkish City Ankara set up the field of play for thrilling encounter
between two top teams of the tournament. Brazil was not received well in the second round as Serbs defeated them in the opening match. However, Brazil recovered from the shock of early defeat by claiming success in the next match.
Gabriela Guimaraes once again helped Brazil in a great way. She was named the best scorer of the match as she registered 28 points. She received huge applause from audience for displaying a tactful play. Captain Raquel and Rosamaria also worked out great
performance and enabled Brazil to get hold of the winning spot.
The start of the game was not very helping for Brazil as the opponents scored consecutive points. They produced powerful serves and spiked the ball hard. They picked up lead, while Brazil struggled to chase the score. The first technical timeout (FTT) showed
Poland with 2-point lead over Brazil (11-9). Meanwhile, Brazilians had settled down in their positions. They hit back and responded to Poland’s heavy thumping by making counter attacks. Poland added two more points but Brazil scored 5 points. Poles trailed
behind with three points. Once Brazil surpassed Poland, the South Americans never stopped and controlled the operations of game up till the verge of winning first set. Brazil secured opening by throwing 25-17 on board. Gabriela and Rosamaria were the most
influential points of the set-1.
Brazil started out well in the following set and tried to put pressure on the opponents. They led the score in the start but Poles raised head after the first technical break. Poland used Ewelina Janicka to defend against Brazilian attack. She offered monster
blocking and broke the rhythm of Brazilian spikers. Poland went up at 19-12 but Brazil fought back and levelled the score 23-all. The tussle continued for 30 minutes but finally Poland emerged as team with better status in second set. They won the second by
posting 26-24.
Poland took a great start in third set and jumped to 16-11. Brazil tried but couldn’t catch up with Poland. There were some moments when both teams came really close but eventually Poland took away the game with final score of 29-27.
Brazil managed to tie the game score by winning fourth set and match entered 15-piont golden set. The notable efforts of Brazilian team allowed them crop out good results. Brazil won the final set and settled for match victory.
Polish Head Coach Andrzej Pec praised the effort put by Brazilian team and congratulated them. He said Poland’s suffered the damage on account of bad service reception and too many mistakes. On the other hand, Brazilian Coach Mauricio Thomas stated: “Poland
is a very strong team with a lot of power in serving and blocking. I’m very happy that after yesterday’s defeat we bounced back strongly. Today we saw the spirit of Brazil.”
“We played with heart and emotions. I’m satisfied that even in difficult situations we kept cool and focused on our tasks. Let’s rest and get ready for tomorrow’s match versus Japan.” concluded the captain of Brazil Raquel.
