Brazil outperforms at the South America Junior Championships – Athletics news
As the 39th edition of the South American Junior Championships, organised at the Estadio Alfonso Galvis Duque in Medellin, Colombia, concluded on Sunday, September 25, the results affirmed Brazilian dominance over the three-day event. The track
of the event, present at a high altitude of 1495m, epitomised best conditions for athletes to display best of their performances.
The event which comprised of young, motivated and charged up athletes brought a number of electrifying moments for the audience. However, the player who made the showdown worth watching for spectators was young Tamiris de Liz, who marked her dominance in
the 100m and 200m sprinting competitions. To prevail over her rivals in the contest, the 15-year-old stopped the clock in 11.43 seconds and 23.35 seconds, respectively.
The time clocked for 200m competition emerged as a new Championships record as well as the Youth record for South America. De Liz, the Joinville-born tall girl has been trained by Brazil’s former Champion and South American Championships medal winner in
the 400m Hurdles, Margit Weise. This was the second time when the young promising player performed at an international event.
Earlier, she has been to the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships organised in Lille, where she could only cross the finishing line for a sixth position.
Another performer who earned the limelight as well as the attention of spectators was young Braian Toledo from Argentina, who also happens to be the 2010 Youth Olympic Champion in Javelin Throw. While performing in Medellin, the athlete observed a championships
record for throwing to a splendid 74.04m. At the South America Junior Championships, this was the first title ever that the Argentinean claimed.
Among local performers, it was Eider Arevalo, champion of last year’s Race Walking Junior Cup, who dominated the field in the 10,000m contest for breasting the tape in 39 minutes and 56.01 seconds. The results displayed by the athlete proved to be a new
Championships record, as well as a new National Junior record.
Finally, another competition where Brazilian performer, Tamara de Souza annihilated rivals was the Heptathlon competition, where for bagging a staggering 5545 points, the girl not only marked her personal best but also emerged as the second best performer
in the all-time South American Junior Lists.
The top position in the discipline is being held by Vanessa Spinola, who bagged 5763 points in 2009. For putting up the formidable total on the board, De Souza observed her personal best performances in 100m hurdles, 200m run and in the Shot Put competition,
respectively. The girl, who is striving hard to improve her performance in 800m competition, is all set to improve her overall displays in future events.
