Brazil rally for 3-0 victory over Mexico – Volleyball News
Brazil earned a splendid 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-16) win over Mexico at the Ricardo Arias sports hall in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on Monday.
The first fixture in Pool B of the 2012 Men’s Pan American Volleyball Cup brought Brazil and Mexico together on one court. The defending champions Brazil exhibited a great performance and finished the match in straight sets. The South Americans totally dominated the opponents and sent them to first loss in the tournament. The three-set affair completed its run in 69 minutes.
Mauricio Borges topped the scorers with match-high 17 points, whereas his teammate the opposite William Cargnin notched up 10 points. Daniel Vargas fought for Mexico and added 11, in the loss.
First set of the match lasted for 25 minutes and helped Brazil to go on front with 1-0 record in the match. Powerful serves coupled with convincing spikes devastated the Mexican players. They played under pressure and dropped too many easy shots. Brazilian team, therefore, staged a consistent performance and secured opening set of the match with ten points.
Second set unfolded the similar story. Brazil continued with its winning ways and did not allow Mexico to come up. In front of 150 spectators, Brazilian team made successful attack attempts and cruised past to second-set win. Brazil finished both sets with identical score of 25-15 and enjoyed a great rhythm to win the third set.
Mexico failed to come out of blues and ended up third set with only 16 points. Brazil claimed the final set and settled for 3-0 victory in the match.
Winning Coach Leonardo Carvalho stated: "I am satisfied with the result, because it's a young cast, with two who have experience in the Brazilian Super League and only with two weeks of training together. I thought Mexico would come with their best players and I watched videos of the Pan American Games, but they are also with the young players who didn’t have a good day.”
His Mexican counterpart Jorge Miguel Azair congratulated Brazil for victory. In his views, too many unforced mistakes of his team caused the bad results in the match. However, he called it a learning experience and urged his team to cover the flaws in the coming match against United States.
Jesus Rangel, the Mexican captain, commented: "Brazil is a strong team to play with, you have to play always at one hundred percent, we have come up with a young team just learning, but I think we will have many opportunities in the future.”
