Brazil stays in limelight on Day 3: 2011 CSV Continental Cup – Women’s tournament
The cracking women’s beach volleyball action got the green light with a post-downpour scenario on Day-3 of the 2011 CSV Continental Cup. The overnight rain in Guatape, Colombia, caused a bit of delay in the opening of the third day but the matches eventually
started back up. The Brazilians once again showed strong presence on the court and maintained their superiority in the contest. According to the set formula of the competition, they played four matches on Day-3 and remained remarkably consistent. Nothing could
hinder their performance and they finished the day 4-0. The results of Day-3 were as follows:

Game 1
Brazil 1 vs. Colombia 2
2-0 (21-15, 21-18)

Game 2
Brazil 2 vs. Uruguay 2
2-0 (21-16, 21-14)

Game 3
Brazil 1 vs. Venezuela 2
2-0 (21-19, 21-15)

Game 4
Brazil 2 vs. Colombia 2
2-1 (17-21, 21-18, 15-12)
Brazil bagged 8 points on Day-3 and moved to 23 points in the tournament. Argentina followed up with 20 points, while Colombia and Venezuela switched places in third and fourth slots with 16 points, apiece. The host Colombia did a great job of pushing Venezuela
behind and got hold of the third position. However, Uruguay held on tot the last spot.
In the third day opener, the duo of Camila Fonseca and Isabela Maio, tagged as Brazil 1, rallied past Sara Fraija and Yuly Salamanca of Colombia 2 in straight sets. Brazilian team played in its usual style and influenced the hosts both offensively and defensively.
Colombia dropped the first set by trailing behind 6 points (15-21) but offered good competition to Brazil in the next frame. They came as close as 18-21 but failed to prove their endeavours in front of the local audience. Brazil grabbed their first win of
the day and added two points to their count.
The second match brought Livia Mendonca/ Thais Ferreira of Brazil 2 in competition with Uruguay’s Karina Cardozo and Maria Eugenia, who posed no threat on the Brazilian side. Thais played to her full potential and showed no mercy in hitting strong spikes.
Likewise, Camila complimented her partner and Brazil 2 managed to dismiss underdog Uruguayan pair, 2-0 (21-16, 21-14).
With one victory in hand, Camila Fonseca and Isabela Maio returned to action in their second match against Karelys Mosquera and Norisbeth Agudo of Venezuela 2. The opening set of the match was a close fight as Venezuelan ladies showed good fighting spirit
and offered strong resistance. They lost the set with a narrow margin of just two points. Nevertheless, Brazilian tandem dominated their opponent in the second set and claimed match victory.
Colombia 2 (Sara Fraija/ Yuly Salamanca) was equipped with stupendous support of local fans when they faced Brazil 2 (Livia Mendoza/ Thais Ferreira) in the fourth match. The rowdy home crowd was on the tip of their toes as the duo picked up the first set
of the match. Brazil had to put in a valiant effort, in order to create the tie of scores in the second set. The visiting duo carried the momentum into third set and claimed 2-1 (17-21, 21-18, 15-12) win over host Colombia.
Thais shared her thoughts after the match and stated: “They were boosted by the fans in the first set, but then we concentrated and imposed our game on them. All the time, I thought ‘We are better’ and ‘We will show them on their home turf,’ and that’s what
we did.”
