The Women’s Volleyball Tournament of the Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011 is currently taking place in Guadalajara, Mexico. The second day of the tournament saw matches take place between various teams including a Pool A match between Brazil as well as
Canada on October 16. The contest did not take long to reach its close as the Brazilians were able to make a clean sweep of the Canadians.
Not only were the Brazilians successful in winning the match in three back to back sets, they did so by bagging each win by a comfortable margin. The first set of the match saw the two teams stay close initially but as the match progressed, the Brazilians
were able to get the upper hand. The second set was dominated by the Brazilians all through and the Canadians could not do much to stop them from securing a win. The Canadians seemed to have lost all heart in the third set as the Brazilians made their way
towards a match win at the following final set scores: 25-19, 25-12 and 25-10.
Jose Roberto Guimaraes, the coach of the Brazilian team expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference after the match had reached its close: “We improved our concentration tonight in blocking and defense. We hope to do the same against
Cuba. I don’t like to talk about medals. We played two months ago and Cuba comes as a better team with more attack options.”
The Brazilian captain, Fabiana Claudino, shared her feelings by commenting in the following way: “We had good services and good blocking plays. Everybody did a great job.”
On the other hand, the Canadian coach Arnd Ludwig, shared his feelings in the following manner: “Brazil is number one and we are number 20. That is a big difference. Our championship starts tomorrow once we face Dominican Republic.”
The player that remained the most active in the entire match was the Brazilian Paula Pequeno who tallied a total of 13 points while the Canadian player that was able to top her side was Sherline Holness, registering a total of nine points for her team.
The Brazilian team was able to outperform their rivals in almost every aspect of the match but particularly their net play and serving kept the pressure on the Canadians all through the match. The Brazilians put up a solid wall of defence for the Canadian
players by pulling off eight blocks while the Canadians were only able to manage three blocks. On the other hand, the Brazilians were able to score points on four service aces while the Canadians did not even tally a single one.
