Brazil sweeps Costa Rica in a Women’s Pan American Cup match – Volleyball news
A Pool B match of the XI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup took place between Brazil and Costa Rica on Thursday, July 12, 2012. The Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez was playing host to the competition that was held in the Colegio de Bachilleres Gymnasium.
The Brazilians were able to make a clean sweep over Costa Rica in front of an audience of 1500 spectators.
The defending champions Brazil took a total of one hour and 10 minutes to bag three sets back to back at the following final set scores: 25-9, 25-15 and 25-11.
The Brazilian coach, Claudio Pinheiro, expressed his feeling at the win in the following words, “My team is very young and we have played only four matches before coming to this competition. The players were well focused and didn’t give many chances to a
Costa Rica team that have players of quality. Our goal is to work hard and go as high as we can on the podium.”
On the other hand, the coach of the Costa Rican squad, Xavier Perales, shared his views at the outcome of the match in the following manner, “It was a very difficult match for us but I am satisfied with our progress compared to our last tournament. We made
many errors but also because of the ability of Brazil.”
Two of the Brazilian players, Priscila Daroit as well as Gabriela Guimaraes were able to register the highest number of points in the entire match by tallying a score of 11. On the other hand, the most points scored on the Costa Rican side were by Verania
Willis Lindo as she made her presence felt by tallying five points for her side.
The opening set started off with a Brazilian lead that the defending champions were able to hold on to till the end of the frame. The Costa Ricans were no match for their rivals as Brazil drove ahead with speed and did not give any room to Costa Rica to
gain control. As a result, it was only a matter of time before Brazil was able to bag the first set of the match easily at 25-9.
The loss of the first set got the Costa Ricans to perform a bit better in the second set but they could not match the skill of the Brazilians. Costa Rica only held the lead for a short time before Brazil snatched it away to storm ahead and go on to secure
the second set of the match at 25-15.
The loss of the first two sets did not improve the performance of the Costa Ricans in the third frame which the Brazilians dominated from the start. The Brazilians kept on extending their advantage while Costa Rica trailed all the way behind. Brazil bagged
the third set of the match at 25-11.
