Brazil sweeps Cuba in a finals match of World Grand Prix
The first match of the third day of the final round of the FIVB World Grand Prix saw a contest take place between Olympic Champion Brazil and Cuba on Friday, June 29, 2012 in Ningbo, China. The venue of the match was the Ningbo Beilun Gymnasium which had
a crowd of 3,400 spectators. The Brazilians took an hour and nine minutes to make a clean sweep over their opponents.
The Brazilians did not only win the match in three straight sets, they also smothered the Cubans at the following final set scores: 25-17, 25-12 and 25-14.
The coach of the Brazilian squad Jose R. Guimaraes expressed his joy at the win by giving the following statements, “Today we played really good. It is important for us to get 3 points to keep going on in a row. We served hard, we had 13 points in severing,
which is a good number, and the blocking is the same, I am satisfied about my team.”
On the other hand, the Cuban coach Juan Carlos Gala Rodriguez shared his views at the outcome of the match by making the following comments, “We are a different team today, we played three very bad games so far.”
The player who was able to earn the most points in the match was the Brazilian Adenizia Silva as she tallied 10 points for her side. On the other hand, the top Cuban scorer was Yanelis Santos Allegne with a score of 8 points.
The first set reached a tie at 5-5 but the Brazilians got to a lead of 18-13 when the second technical time out came. When the two teams came back onto the courts, Brazil stormed ahead to win the opening set at 25-17.
The Brazilians started off the second set of the game with a 4-0 lead that extended till 7-4. Cuba was never able to come close enough to get a winning chance and Brazil ended up with another win at 25-12.
Brazil was leading again in the third set at 8-4 and the advantage slowly grew to 20-11 after which Cuba had no chance of recovering as Brazil sealed the deal at 25-14.
