Brazil sweeps Italy in final round of FIVB World Grand Prix - Volleyball
A Pool B match in the final round of the FIVB World Grand Prix took place between Brazil and Italy in Macau, China on August 24th. The venue of the competition was the Macau East Asian Games Dome. The resulting competition between the two sides
ended when Brazil made a clean sweep over their opponents.
The match between the two sides was pretty much one sided as the Italians did not provide the Brazilians much of a challenge to make the contest interesting. The first set of the match was easily won by the Brazilians as the Italians could never take the
lead and kept trailing all through. The second set saw the Italians step up their game only to fall again to the Brazilians in the end. The loss of the first two sets did not work well with the performance of the Italians and Brazil was able to win the match
at the following final set scores: 25-16, 25-17 and 25-17.
The Brazilian head coach, Jose Roberto Guinmaraes, expressed himself after the match at the press conference by giving these statements: “Thank you Massimo for the compliments. I am very happy with my team. We played very well. Our serves, blocks and defence
did a very good job.”
Whereas the Italian coach, Massimo Barbolini, shared his feelings in this manner: “First of all congratulations to Brazil, today they have given us a lesson on volleyball. We must think about what we need to do next. Today a lot of problems were made by
the good game of Brazil, while some other situations were made by our mistakes. We played very badly and against Brazil we cannot play like this.”
The first technical time out of the first set came with the Brazilians leading but the Italians kept on the chase. However, with the onset of the second technical time out, the Brazilians started to increase the gap between themselves and the Italians. This
was made possible by the strong attacking side of the Brazilian squad. Once the Brazilians started on their attacking spree, they did not stop until the opening set rested with them at 25-16.
The Italians started the second set with determination and focus but before Italy could make any head way, the Brazilians were able to dominate the courts. Once the Brazilian attackers got started, there was not stopping them until they had bagged the second
set of the game at 25-17.
The momentum generated from winning the first two sets enabled the Brazilians to start off the third set with a good show of strength that propelled them forwards while leaving the Italians behind in the lurch. The third set was secured by the Brazilians
at 25-17.
