Brazil sweeps Puerto Rico in second round of FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship - Volleyball
Brazil had a match with Puerto Rico in the second round of Pool G at the FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship on August 25th. The tournament is currently taking place in Argentina as the two teams played in the city of Almirante Brown. What followed
was a short clash in which the Brazilians made a clean sweep of their opponents.
Not only did Brazil win three back to back sets, they did so without giving much of a chance to the Puerto Ricans to make any head way in the game. The first set was won by Brazil by a significant margin while the performance of the Puerto Ricans decreased
further in the second set. The third set of the game saw the Puerto Ricans fight hard initially but eventually the Brazilians prevailed in sealing the deal and winning the match at the following final set scores: 25-17, 25-16 and 25-18.
The coach of the Brazilian team, Percy Oncken, made the following comments at the press conference after the match, "We already knew them from the Pan American Cup, and I can say that they are great players, I hope they can continue growing. For us, although
we won, the team has lost its spirit. We have three battles left and we need our competition spirit back.”
On the other hand, the Puerto Rican coach, Ramon Lawrence, shared his views by giving these statements: "It was a difficult match today. Brazil is a high-level team. Our players need to have more self-confidence. We have to continue working for the future
development of these young players.”
The Puerto Ricans got themselves the lead early on in the first set. They were able to extend their advantage until the first technical time out at 8-6. After the two teams came back onto the courts, Brazil did not waste much time in getting the advantage
and moving ahead at 14-10. When the second technical time out came, Brazil was still leading at 16-12. The Brazilians were able to march comfortably on towards the close of the set at 25-17.
The start of the second set saw Brazil come out strong and take the lead at 8-5 which they were able to stretch to 16-10. The Puerto Ricans made unsuccessful efforts to turn the tables while Brazil went smoothly ahead to win the set at 25-16.
Despite the fact that Brazil was leading the third set at the beginning, Puerto Rico managed to tie the score at 10-10 but the second technical time out gave the lead back to Brazil at 16-14. It was only a matter of time after that until Brazil had secured
a win at 25-18.
The Brazilians have now bagged two victories at the Almirante Brown while the Puerto Ricans have yet to win a match in the tournament.
