Brazil wins gold in the Boys’ Under-19 Pan Am Cup  - Volleyball news
The final of the Boys’ U19 Pan Am Cup took place on Saturday, July 16, as Brazil and Puerto Rico competed for the title. The crowd at the gym in Mexicali Mexico came in to see an exciting final but what followed was a one sided affair. In no time at all
the Brazilians had made a clean sweep over their opponents, winning each set of the match with a considerable margin.
The Puerto Ricans tried to match the pace of the Brazilian squad in the opening set but they could not keep up with the superior performance of the South Americans as they soared towards an easy opening set win. The loss of the initial set of the game seemed
to have a dampening effect on the spirits of the Puerto Ricans who showed a further decrease in their performance in the second set. The Brazilians, who were already two sets ahead, did not take long in bagging the match at the following final set scores:
25-15, 25-11 and 25-16.
The Puerto Rican player, Carlos Acosta, made the following comments after the match: “Today we did not show the big wish of winning on the court, my teammates gave their best, but it was not enough.”
On the other hand, the Brazilian captain, Thiago Veloso, addressed the Puerto Rican squad by saying, “I want to congratulate Puerto Rico. This was a good match for us, because we set a strategy set by set and we hope to have a good preparation for the world
championship.”
The Brazilian side has been giving top notch performances in the tournament since the beginning. They were able to smother the Americans side in the semi-final match as the U.S lost to the Brazilians by 25-19, 25-23, 25 and 21. Puerto Rico on the other hand
had a relatively tough time defeating Mexico in the semis as the match went on for five long and grueling sets that tallied the following scores: 17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-13.
The Brazilian side won the final of the match as a result of team effort. Both the attack as well as the defense of the Brazilians was working in sync to put pressure on the Puerto Rican squad. Despite that, there were some Brazilians players that played
a key role in the Brazilian victory. Joao Ferreira, Flavio Gualberto and Henrique Batagim were all able to tally important points for Brazil. Ferreira scored a total of 13 points whereas Gualberto and Batagim each added nine points to the Brazilian side of
the score board. In the opposing camp, Acosta registered five points for Puerto Rico.
