Under the command of Head Coach Ze Roberto, the women’s national volleyball team of Brazil headed to London this past Saturday.
The team consisted of opposites Sheilla and Tandara; middle blockers Adenízia, Fabiana and Thaisa; setters Dani Lins and Fernandinha; wing-spikers Fernanda Garay, Jaqueline, Natália and Paula Pequeno and the defensive expert (libero) Fabi.
Brazil is one of the 12 teams that qualified for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The biggest sports gala of the year, the London Olympics, is scheduled to start off on July 25. The women’s volleyball tournament will take centre stage on July 28. Since the
time is running short and the event is approaching near, all the participating teams are heading for London.
The Earls Court will provide the backdrop for the Olympic Volleyball Tournament. Hence, the teams are supposed to install their bases at the Earl Court.
According to the set formula of the competition, the participating 12 teams will play in two pools. Brazil is placed in Pool B alongside teams from China, South Korea, Serbia, Turkey, and USA. On the other hand, hosts Great Britain, Dominican Republic, Japan,
Italy, Russia, and Algeria will be tagged as Pool A teams.
Team Brazil is the defending champion of the competition. Currently, the Brazilian squad is enjoying a top form and has high hopes to defend its Olympic legacy. However, the team will have a daunting task to deal with the US team.
Speaking of the current team-line, the Brazilian mentor Ze Roberto stated: "We are in a strong group. Turkey is the team that has evolved the most in recent years and so we need to hit the ground running in our very first match. Soon after that we play against
the United States, who have also performed well in recent years. We know what we are up against, but we can be a match for any team in the world."
Likewise, the Olympic rookie Fernanda Garay said the expectations are high. She further added: “This is my first Olympics and hopefully we’ll play a good competition. Of course there are goose bumps, but we will have a tough opponent in the opener and we
are well prepared."
