Brazilian, Swiss ladies make it to the Sanya Open Main Draw – Volleyball news
The 2012 Sanya Open women’s beach volleyball tournament entered the qualifying round on Wednesday, April 25.
A total of 34 duos competed for Main Draw slots at the Qualification Tournament. At the end of day, top eight teams of the competition captured the limelight and advanced to the next stage of the tournament.
Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas Figueiredo exhibited a winning performance and reserved a berth in the Main Draw. Elsewhere, Tanja Goricanec and Muriel Graessli from Switzerland also joined the winner’s circle by claiming success in all of
their matches. Brazilian and Swiss duos will now showcase their skills in the Main Draw, which will take centre stage on Thursday.
Agatha-Seixas turned many head around with their colossal performance in the qualifying matches. They were challenged by higher seeds in both matches but managed to overcome the opponents.
In the first match, Brazilian dark horses crossed their ways with fourth-seeded Wang Fan/Yue Yuan. The opposite duo had the apparent advantage of playing with a lot of support from local fans. Yet the visiting Brazilian duo made a difference and finished
the match in straight sets 2-0 (21-13, 21-9). It was an upset for Chinese pair but victory boosted the moral of Brazilian to the maximum.
The winning duo of Agatha/Seixas carried the momentum into second match and held off Inguna Minusa/Inese Jursone \from Latvia in the similar fashion. They sent 21-12 and 21-9 on board and clinched success in the match.
Agatha/Seixas could not advance to the Main-Draw in Brazil but made a great come back in the next event SWATCH FIVB World Tour event. In this regards, Agatha commented, “I think it’s very important that we arrived here first. It’s our first time together
and we’ll just stay focused and keep going.”
Swiss Tanja Goricanec and Muriel Graessli also displayed a wonderful action on the net and grabbed success in the qualifying matches. They defeated Elwin-Iatika of Venezuela in the first match, which ended up with final score of 2-0 (21-14, 21-18). Afterwards,
the Swiss duo breezed past Huang Ying/Ding Jingjing of China in the next fixture, 2-1 (16-21, 21-15, 15-7).
Goricanec talked about the match in the following manner, “I made a lot of serving mistakes in the first set because I was a little bit nervous. But the second set is better. It’s difficult to play (in the hot weather). I have to do all my best because it’s
the last game of my day and I made it. Our first goal was go get qualified and we made it, so now game after game, we just have to play well. Last time when I got qualified was two years ago, so I’m very happy about it.”
