Brazilian Beach Volleyball Kings and Queens Tournament coming up in February 2012
The Brazilian Volleyball Federation has recently confirmed that the 2012 Beach Volleyball Kings and Queens Tournament will take place in the month of February.
This will mark the 14th edition of the Brazilian Kings and Queens Tournament as it was incepted in 1999. The annual Brazilian event will reunite the top eight athletes of the country from the previous season.
The Ipanema Beach in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro will set up the field of play for the tournament. The women’s competition will cover its length from February 18 to 19, while respective men’s competition for King of Beach crown will be held from
February 25 to 26.
The grid of eight players in each gender category will be split into two groups of four, who will play single set-matches. The players from each pool, who will perform better, will advance to the three set final match. In the final contest, the players will
have the freedom to pick any other contestant, except his or her regular partner in the season.
In the women’s section, 2011 SWATCH FIVB World Tour champions Larissa Franca, Juliana Felisberta Silva, Talita Antunes, Maria Elisa Antonelli, Vivian Cunha, Val Leao, Taiana Lima and Shaylyn Bede will jump on the board.
Larissa is the defending the champion of the crown as she managed to secure the honour in 2011 season. However, she is likely to have a tough competition with her partner Juliana for the crown of Beach Queen. Taiana Lima is debuting at the Queen’s competition,
while two-time winner Shaylyn Bede has returns to the competition after a break of three years.
On the other hand, the competition for King of Beach will be attended by top Brazilian guns such as current world champion Alison Cerutti, Emanuel Rego, Ricardo Santos, Pedro Cunha, Marcio Araujo, Harley Marques, Bruno Schmidt and Pedro Salgado. The title
will be defended by Alison Cerutti, who settled for the honour last year.
The FIVB executive vice-president and CSV and Brazilian Volleyball Federation president Dr Ary Graça commented, “The key of the competition is to bring together young athletes with world-wide known stars. Regardless of each player’s regular partnership,
the partner´s rotation is very attractive. So, the individual ability of each competitor is always deciding, as the most talented gets the title.”
