Brazilian Serie A: Fluminense RJ 1-1 vs. SE Palmeiras – Full Time Report
The Brazilian Serie A was in full motion as two of the juggernauts of the competition were set to go head-to-head in a match that was guaranteed to be one that would entertain the fans. The match was being played between Fluminense RJ and SE Palmeiras. Both the teams have had their fair share of dominance in the domestic league, and have managed to harness some of the superstars of Brazilian football over the past. The match would prove to be a decisive one for the title race as well, and players on both teams were looking to impress.
The most notable player that was going to be taking the field tonight was the Brazilian-born Portuguese international Deco. The player was offloaded by Chelsea earlier this transfer window and Fluminense didn’t think twice before snapping up the player. The player was assured to play his best for the rest of his club career due to the fact that he was still looking to get a spot in the Portuguese national team for the upcoming Euro 2012.
The match was scheduled to take place in the Maracana stadium, which is situated in the capital of Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. The referees set to officiate tonight’s game were Alicio Pena, who was the head referee, and Helberth Costa and Jair Albano, who were acting as the linesmen on the night. All three referees were Brazilian nationals.
The match kicked off to the noisy Brazilian crowd that the players had grown accustomed to over the years.
The home-team initially picked up the pace of the game and started to play with the Brazilian flair that has made the country so famous. It wasn't long before they started to look threatening, and on the fourteenth minute, Emerson scored the first goal for the home-team. The goal came after a series of good passes and it was one that the team deserved.
The first half was relatively quiet from then on, apart from the fact that Diogo picked up an injury and couldn't participate much longer in the match. The player was then replaced in the 30th minute by former Chelsea player Juliano Belletti.
The first-half ended with the score-line being one goal to nil in favour of the home team.
The second half kicked off in almost the same manner with which the first half ended. The home team were dominating possession, while the away team looked threatening every time they got the ball.
Palmeiras were, however, the more desperate of the two teams and that was clearly visible because of the fact that five of their players picked up yellow cards through the course of the game.
However, everything seemed to change in the ninetieth minute, after some slack defending by Fluminense, Ewerthon snuck past the defence and scored a final-minute goal for the away team. The match ended almost immediately after the goal, giving the home team little or no chance of a comeback.
When the match ended, the points were shared between the two teams. Fluminense were still on top of the league, while Palmeiras are stuck in the eighth position.
