Question:

Brazilian X English birthday party?

I will soon have to organize a birthday party to my daughter and I was wondering if a Brazilian-style party would be more interesting than trying to copy the birthday parties we've been to in England. We wouldn't have anything wild going on, but food, music and maybe the treats in the party bag could be different as well as some of the activities. I tend to think a "foreign party" would be more interesting, but I don't want to be accused of trying to impose my culture on people... Maybe a should try to do a mix of both like "Pass the parcel with samba music"?

  1. Rhea,

    A typical brazilian aniversary (you say aniversário or, níver, in portuguese) is composed by some "obrigatory" things:

    (1) The preparativeses:

    - A barbecue (churrasco or, churras) at afternoon - from noom to about 5PM -, in the day before or afer the party. If at side a pool in a sunny day, it would be best. Very brazilian.

    (2) Food:

    - Many candies (most of chocolate, cheese, etc.). These candies have the format of a ball and are small (1 inch of diameter, aprox.);

    - A decorated cake. You can choose her prefered character or artist (may be Mickey, Hello Kitty, Avril Lavigne, Coldplay, etc), but, the cake must to have a picture of her "heroes";

    (3) The party (it's not important if it is for a child or teenager):

    - A special decoration. If Brazil is the theme, you can use many green and yellow baloons. You can put some posters with landscapes from Brazil;

    - A video about her. Record and edit a DVD with images of her to show during the party, at night;

    - If she is a 14 y.o.girl and her birthday is for the 15th aniversary, the thing changes totally, because a brazilian party is in the Cinderella style. A french tradition in Brazil, called "debut", when the teens become a young lady, almost a woman, and begin to take part in the social events for adults. So, she must to wear costumes of a princess, and you must to provide a "prince" for her. This, must be a nice guy (maybe a cousin, a friend since their childhood, but not a boyfriend or a candidate for it). Your husband/the dad of the girl, must to give her his arms until they arrive at the saloon where the party would will happen and he must to dance a waltz with her;

    (4)  Music. Many brazilian girl like to sing in 'karaoke'. Other, loves music live and others, to joint all to play and dancing some brazilian music like samba, pagode or funk (I don't like any of these).

    Well, I have selected many links to give you an idea how brazilians does a party for a girl.

    Please, be patient and watch each one, because it is for your daugther. and you need ideas. Then do it for her and watch the videos.

    I hope to help you.
