Brazilian female tandems steal the show on Day-1 of CSV Continental Cup
The semi-final round of the 2011 CSV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup started off on Wednesday, December 7, in Guatape, Colombia. A total of ten beach volleyball teams from Argentina, Brazil, host's Columbia, Uruguay, and Venezuela joined the competition.
According to the set formula of CSV, the opening day of the tournament featured eight matches. Brazilian tandems of Camila Bertozzi/Isabela Maio and Livia Mendonca/Thais Ferreira showcased incredible beach volleyball skills and finished the day with a 4-0
record. They defeated teams from Argentina, Colombia, and Uruguay, and bagged 8 points at the end of Day-1.
First match
The pairing of Livia Medonca and Thais Ferreira opened the day for Brazil. They saw Uruguay’s Lucia Guigou and Fabiana Gomes on the other side of the court. Debuting on the international tournament, 20-year-old Thais Ferreira worked out a great performance
in the match. She perfectly complimented her partner Medonca and overpowered the Uruguayan duo. The better combination of attack and defence tactics allowed Brazil 2 to achieve success. They posted 2-0 (21-13, 21-18) and earned two points for winning the match
in straight sets.
Second match
In the next match, Camila Fonseca and Isabela Maio of Brazil 1 played a close match with home due of Andrea Galindo and Caludia Galindo. The home team was equipped with great support of local fans and had the competitive edge in the game. However, Camila/Isabela
ousted the Columbia team in 1 hour and 6 minutes. In the first two sets, the score was level most of the match. The Columbian pair offered strong resistance and gave tough competition to Brazil. By using the winning edge, Columbia secured a opening set of
the match, 21-18.
Second set was also closely contested but Brazil managed to close the set with narrow lead of 2 points, 26-24. In the third and decisive set the score reached 14 all but Colombia made a mistake and dropped the game to Brazil by 16-14.
Camila Fonseca said: “We knew it would be a difficult game. The Colombian sisters know each other very good and they help a lot in the court. Is one of the pairs more strong of the competition. Was so good to win for Us”
Third match
The winning duo of Livia Mendonca and Thais Ferreira returned to action in the 9th match of day. The charged-up Brazilians exhibited another great performance and downed their counterparts from Argentina. The team of Luciana Fogues and Gabriela
Albano of Argentina failed to put up with heavy strike of Brazil 2 and dropped the decision 2-0 (21-13, 21-13).
Fourth match
Following a great performance against Columbian team in their first match, the duo of Camila and Isabela closed the day with straight set win over Karina Cardozo and Maria Eugenia of Uruguay (22-20, 21-16).
The tournament will be continue to December 11 and the four best placed countries will advance to the final round of the competition.
