Brazilian football league – Match Review: Flamengo versus Corinthians
Flamengo and Corinthians took on each other in a quite an exciting matchup at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange stadium in Rio De Janiero, Brazil. Both the teams who are heavy weights of Brazilian league football have been a source of pride for football
lovers all across the world as players such as Ronaldo, Tevez, Ronaldinho, Kaka and Roberto Carlos have emerged from their ranks to delight club football fans all over the world.
Corinthians were the more dominant team throughout the match but Flamengo did give their rivals a mighty tough time. Nonetheless, Corinthians maintained their supremacy in terms of ball possession throughout the match as their experienced line up seldom
gave the ball away. Corinthians started with the famous El Phenomenon, the Brazilian Ronaldo in a centre forwards role for them.
Ronaldo was undoubtedly one of the finest strikers in football at the start of the 2000s but as time progressed the Brazilian’s career was hampered due to several knee injuries which resulted in a massive loss of pace and fitness for the world cup winning
front man. Regardless, it was Ronaldo who broke the deadlock within the first 45 minutes of the match as at the 30th minute mark, he rolled back the years as he whizzed past two defenders on route to the Flamengo goal. It was a trademark, Ronaldo
strike which left the Flamengo goalkeeper for dead as Corinthians took the lead.
However despite the fact that the goal gave Flamengo impetus to move into attack to gain parity on their opponents, Ronaldo and Co. continued to work their magic for the Corinthians. Just before the half time break, Corinthians missed two great opportunities
to add to their lead. Their wastefulness eventually came back to haunt them as in the 46th minute of the match just after the second half had kicked off, Flamengo scored a brilliant goal of their own through Diogo. The Flamengo striker left the
Corinthians defence in his wake as he played a one-two with Deivid, this strike partner. At the end of the move, Diogo produced a prolific finish to draw his team level.
For the rest of the second half both of the teams played attractive typical Brazilian football but defences prevailed due to some profligate finishing touches from both the sides. At the end, the match finally ended in a draw for both the sides. As Flamengo
and Corinthians got a point each from the one all draw, it can be concluded that Corinthians got the better part of the deal as they were playing away from their home stadium at Flamengo’s home ground. Not only that, the goal by Ronaldo will be seen by Corinthian
fans as a good sign of things to come as the striker now looks in superb touch for their next game.
