Brazilian ju-jitsu question: When you get arm barred in training is it better to try an escape or just tap?

Most of the guys I train with just tap out in training if they get arm barred so that they don't risk injury by trying to escape, to me though it seems counter productive since if you don't practice escaping then you might not be able to escape in a real scenario.

in training the guys usually put it on enough for you to want to tap but not so much that your arm gets hyperextended and causes injury soi practice a few times of getting out of arm bars but only when they are badly applied.

this week ive done grappling sparring 5 times, i find im getting pains to in my elbows. i got arm barred on saturday and was resisting it and there was jerk, which made a crunch. i thought that would have really f**cked it but its alright.

Maybe I'm just leaving it too late to tap.

How do YOU train? Do you tap straight away or do you try to escape?

  1. I do Ju-Jitsu

    we practise

    then practise the counter

that way you don't get hurt

  2. Tap unless you learned the escape. If you didn't learn the escape, flailing around will make it worse.

  3. In training you should always have a goal.  You are not fighting, you are training.  If your goal is to work on positions then tapping quickly is a great idea as you can then start over and get back to working on getting positions.

If your training goal is to get better at escapes then work on them...  But in any event always communicate with your training partner, tell them that you are trying to work on counters so you won't be tapping straight away, this tells them that they don't need to apply more pressure straight away as you work on your counters and escapes.

Communication is always key to avoiding injury and getting a good progression.

If you are just rolling for the sake of rolling then if you can do an escapes then try, if it doesn't work straight away then tap so you don't get hurt, your pride will heal much faster than your elbow joint.

  4. tap as a last resort

  5. Isolate the escape first, have a guy put you in an arm bar but not super tight and try the escape slowly. Let them know what your trying to learn.

Learn to do it static well then, increase the resistance of your partner untill you can escape it at full pace.

Injury is always a risk, but its better to be carefull in the long run, I'd only ever try to escape something that could break my elbow/knee etc thats on tight for a fight with a big cash prize, otherwise is it really worth risking it?

  6. the way i try to escape is turn into it and i  mean by if they have your right arm turn to your right side and try to keep it bent then pull it out or try to sit up in their guard. when i roll i don't like to tap but i will if im tired im 158 160 and ill role with guys that are 180 and 248 im 15 well 16 in a couple of days but i'd try to escape but if you feel like it will break then yell tap tap tap  but try to escape it it will make you a better grappler

  7. its always better to try and escape.  you will lose your honor if you tap.  so what if you break your arm.  that heals.  honor doesnt heal.

  8. Never tap. You think Fedor would tap in training? Next time this guy has an arm bar locked in, show him who the real man is by letting him break your arm.

  9. Always tap right away. Losing makes you better. Concentrate on how your opponent got the arm bar, and next time, try to prevent it before it happens. Never try to escape.

  10. Instead of trying to escape when its fully hyperextended, tap out and ask someone what you did wrong and fix that instead of trying to fix it too late and get your arm broken.

  11. If you are getting arm barred correctly you aren't going to get out of it. Either you tap or you get hurt. It's that simple.
