Brazilian men’s duo advances to the Qualification Tournament in Rome – Volleyball news
The duo of Thiago and Ferramenta remained undefeated on day-1 of the 2012 SWATCH FIVB Rome Grand Slam, which kicked off on Wednesday in Italy.
Out of four Brazilian duos, only one successful team advanced to the second stage of the tournament and it was none than energetic duo of Thiago and Ferramenta, who finished the Country Quota Playoffs with 2-0 record.
Thiago and Ferramenta opened the day by taking on compatriots Harley and Evandro. Both teams had the urge to clinch success in the opening affair of the tournament. However, only one of them could take the winner’s seat.
The match started out in the slow mode as players on both sides took some time to settle down in their positions. Gradually, Thiago-Ferramenta paced things off with some convincing attacks. They quickly traded places with each other and tried to throw the
ball in right spots. They managed to break through the defence line of opponents and went up on the scoreboard. Harley and Evandro put up resistance but failed to stay in the way of swinging spikes from the other side of the net. Eventually, the opening set
came to an end and success fell upon Thiago-Ferramenta (21-16).
In the second frame, Harley showed power and displayed an eye-catching action on the net. Together with his partner, he added consecutive points and tried every possible measure to save the match.
On the other hand, charged-up Thiago and Ferramenta seemed determined to put an end to the tussle in the second set. They used the competitive edge and threw speed bombs in opponents’ half.
As a result, it became a sort of heated competition. The scoreboard experienced frequent fluctuations but finally Thiago-Ferramenta emerged successful. They posted 21-19 on board and captured second set with only a small lead of two points. The match decision
was out in 45th minute, while Thiago-Ferramenta grabbed success.
The winning duo of Thiago and Ferramenta was joined by Benjamin and Bruno in the next match. The other Brazilian tandem had the similar record as Thiago-Ferramenta. They had defeated Santos-Vitor Felipe in their previous match and had one victory in hand.
Thiago-Ferramenta started out well in the second match and did not take long to secure first set with two points, 21-19. Loss in the opening stanza put Bruno-Benjamin on fire. They hit back and dominated the scene in second set. Thiago-Ferramenta could only
score nine points and dropped the second set (9-21).
In the decisive third set, Thiago-Ferramenta regained power and sent 15-13 on board. The match ended with final score of 2-1 (21-19, 9-21, 15-13) and Thiago-Ferramenta earned a ticket to the qualifying round of the Rome Grand Slam.
