Brazil’s Globo Esporte ranks Fernando Alonso as F1 king of fair play – Formula 1 news
Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has been ranked as Formula 1 king of fair play by a Brazilian sport news website, Globo Esporte because the Spaniard didn’t face even a single penalty in 2012.
The Scarlet team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme and failed to develop a competitive car for Alonso and his teammate, Felipe Massa.
Furthermore, Ferrari technical director, Pat Fry even ruled out the chances of a podium finish in the first race of the season and expected to face huge problems in the opening few races.
Although, Massa’s performance was very much hindered by the car’s incompetency during the first few grands prix, but Alonso performed incredibly well and efficiently restricted the damage for his team.
The two-time world champion scored points with impressive consistency throughout the year and even remained at the top of the drivers’ standings for most of the time. However, he faced retirements in a couple of races due to which he lost some important
points in championship fight.
Even though, he fought really hard until the very end of the season, but unfortunately he lost the title to Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing who had the quickest car in the field during the last few races. In addition, it is to be noted that he was just
3 points behind the German driver at the end of the season.
It will be interesting to mention that the 31-year-old has been voted as the driver of the year by the majority of the team principals in a poll conducted by Autosport. Besides, he has recently been ranked as the master of fair play, since he raced well
in accordance with the rules and didn’t receive any penalties as compared to his major opponent, Vettel.
“I have no miracles, I make my miracles the correct rules,” the Spaniard tweeted soon after the end of the season finale.
On the other hand, Pastor Maldonado of Williams has been ranked as penalty king because he was penalised for 15 times for his harsh driving style. Furthermore, Sergio Perez came second on the list as he faced 8 penalties for his mistakes.
