Question:

Breakdown of Republicans vs Democrats morals, etc. TRY not to be biased?

I want a breakdown of what the two parties stand for. I know Republicans are said to be "conservative" and Democrats "Liberal", but I don't really understand much else besides that.

Does this mean that Democrats are for more government spending? More "pro-choice" and people can do what they want - like people can have their own guns and such?

And Republicans would be less spending - and more about sorta Christian moral based - like anti abortion, etc?

PLEASE don't take offense here, I am only trying to understand what the parties stand for.

As a side note: I probably will vote this coming November, and probably for McCain, but I'm open to changing my mind if Obama really stands out to me. I'm more worried about the economy and foreign affairs, and please.. no cheapshots about the war and whatnot, I'm still not sure on who to vote for. Answer the task at hand please. =P

Lastly: This *might* be one of those questions I leave to the voters. Might be lots of good answers or,zero.

  2. Republicans are conservative, both fiscally and socially.  They are pro-life, by and large.  They believe in small government and strict adherence to the constitution.  They believe in the free market as a vehicle self-advancement, and that limited taxation rewards capitalistic activity that benefits everyone through gainful employment. They are pro-gun rights, and support the death penalty and a strong military.  The Republicans currently in office (for the most part, not all of them), have disappointed many in their base by not reigning in government spending.

Democrats tend to be more fiscally and socially liberal.  They tend to be pro-choice, and pro-social programs.  They believe in large government, and government spending.  They believe that higher taxes result in higher revenues to the treasury.  They tend to want to limit gun ownership rights, and do not believe in a strong military as much as Republicans do.

There are those who theorize that Democrats support big government and government funded social programs in order to limit individuality and self-reliance, thereby making the citizenry more dependent on its elected officials, ensuring their re-election.

  3. If the question is legitimate;

Conservatives believe people should be self sufficient, with equal opportunity for success AND failure. They also believe the Founding Fathers' ideals are institutions which should still be followed.

Liberals believe people should be protected from life's tragedies by government entitlements.  They also believe the Constitution is over 200 years old and needs updating.

  4. John Cretien and the Liberals were against war, where as, Bush and his administration were advocates of it. In Canada, abortions are permitted, but there is no capital punishment. In USA there is capital punishment, where the statistics are concluding that 40-50% of those on death row are innocent. In Canada, where it is a democratic country, people claim there isn't free speech, but in America the patriot act has been put into action. It is hard to get healthcare in USA, my grandparents which are both elderly and retired are having problems with that. In Canada, healthcare is very easy to get. Crime rates are low. The Canadian dollar is doing well.

  5. They're basically the same.  Both are in the pocket of big corporations.

  6. "Does this mean that Democrats are for more government spending? More "pro-choice" and people can do what they want - like people can have their own guns and such?"

More, bigger government yes!  Pro choice, well that depends if its a choice they want you to make.  Abortion = good, guns = bad, legalization of marijuana = good, cigarettes = bad, high taxes = good, Americans deciding what to do with their own earned money = bad, saving the dung beetle/fire fly = good, drilling for oil or opening a new freeway off ramp = bad, g*y rights = good, family values and religion = bad, burning our flag = good, saluting our flag = bad.......So check with them first that way you will be assured you are living the enlightened path and your actions fit within the "international" community.

  7. Okay, the Democrats are pro big-government to run your life how THEY want, not how you want.  And Republicans......hmmmm, I guess they are basically the same when you take it down to the roots.

  8. You're just a little bit off-base.

One can't say Republicans are the party of less spending after the last seven years. Bush began with a budget surplus and now has a record setting budget deficit.

Nor can they claim to be the party of Christian morality. (Democrats can't lay claim to Christian morality, either....but they never claimed it in the first place, unlike the holier than thou Conservatives).

Democrats, generally, are in favor of less government intervention....until it comes down to guns.

Neither party is for more government spending. Democrats, however, are more upfront and realistic about spending, where Republicans will make promises they have no intention of keeping. The best example of this was George Herbert Walker Bush and his pledge of "read my lips...no new taxes". After the election, he promptly raised taxes.

Additionally, Republicans seem to have a hatred for the U.S. Constitution. George W. Bush thinks it's "just a God-d**n piece of paper". Please don't get angry at me for that one. Those were his words....not mine.

  9. The Democrats believe in the government created by the founders; Republicans want an Ameri"K"a recognizable only to Republicans. Reps are all alike and want you to be alike too. Dems are all unique individuals & rugged individualists. This is it in a nutshell.

  10. Here we go. Republican, to self educate, have a mind for thinking on your own behalf, give tax breaks to big buisness to keep them from going overseas and takeing away millions of jobs from our own country. They stand for life and are not 100% against abortion as some say rather if you spread your legs and guys if you jump in then guss what? It's called being responsable and showing you you shouldnt have done it in the first place if you weren't commited. They also hate taxes as they believe that every American is able to rise and become better without the government running your life.

Democrats are pro government in every aspect of your life. Hillary Clinton was quoted on saying every US familey should have a social worker in there house.of coarse every house except hers. They also are against American freedoms unless it profits them. They dont like the fact that people can own firearms and they balme the manufacturer instead of the illegal immagrant who killed someone. They tax big buisness and force them to relocate just to tax them even more due to haveing to ship products in but the $.50 ph rate makes it better for the company. They think social programs are the answer to all things. Government run healthcare, LOL, just check out your local VA and then tell me you would want your child being taken care of there.  Last is the need to blame everyone but themselves. Democrats only in the last 30 years have turned to a side that a true democrat isn't.

Remember the No child Left behind act that they blame Bush for failing to do? Have you ever read the actual bill after the democrates got it on the floor? They have made it so hard that every school who has applied for funding has been denied. They created so much red tape for the purpous of saying Bush failed to make there party seem like they are for the people when it's the furthest from the truth.

How about the voucher program? Wouldnt you have loved to go to a private school of your choice? The republicans believe every American has the right to choose the education they feel is best for there child. The democrats however, you know, the ones who are for the people? struck it down before it was written. Democrat hero's such as N Pelosi, Harry Ried, John Murtha, civil rights left wing gods, AL Sharpton, Jesse Jackson were so afraid that every day kids would be allowed to sit next to ther own children that they smashed it and even worse convinced some of the American people this was bad and cost to  much money. I guess it's better for America to support saving the 3 featherd swollow rather than letting our children get the best education they can with our own money.

You may think I am a republican but thats wrong. I am independant but I hold conservative views. Democrats do not represent what there party is supposed to be. FDR was the last true democrat in history, all the rest are out for there own leagacy, not for you, not for me, for them and only them.

  11. OK, this is essentially two separate issues. We'll start with philosophy, then move to practicality.

Traditionally, "liberal" has been a more activist approach to government. In other words, let's do more to point society in certain directions. "Conservative" has more of a status quo approach, as in not interfering with individuals and businesses whenever possible.

OK. Democrats usually have aligned themselves on the liberal side. They have been more likely to attract voters from the working class. Republicans have been more likely to attract voters from the upper class. In economics, Democrats might try to help the country's fiscal health by raising the minimum wage, Republicans might try to do the same by lowering tax rates.

But here's the catch: the definitions for party membership change over the years. Barry Goldwater practically was considered a father of conservatism. But in hindsight, Goldwater was much more of a libertarian than today's Republicans would like. (He was pro-g*y rights, for example.) Democrats have been known as bigger spenders -- and in some cases deservedly so -- but Clinton came the closest to balancing the budget during the course of his administration as compared to anyone in the last 50 years.

The abortion issue that you cite is an interesting one. It's become something of a litmus test. There are few Democrats who would call themselves pro-life, and there are few Republicans who would call themselves pro-choice. Strictly speaking, you would think that the party against government interference in such matters would be the Republicans ... but it is not. The current Republican coalition, which has a strong religious contingent, has taken on such positions on issues like that. Republicans right now often are pro-death penalty and pro-school prayer.

Some of this is regional, of course. I've been to Idaho, where the next person can be found by the next mountain a few miles away. And I've been to New York City and Washington. Would you really expect people in both places to have the same views on gun control? In Idaho, gun ownership is a tradition; in New York, it's a threat.

Not saying this is good or bad in any particular case -- it simply is.

Two other points for you: doing nothing rarely has a constituency in government. Republicans pleaded for years for a balance budget, and got nowhere politically. Delivering items to the home district is always good news for incumbants.

And, there is far more agreement on issues than candidates would let you believe. If there weren't, we would never see anything done. There's a lot of gamesmanship going on in the process, but sometimes a quiet consensus moves items down the field toward the goal line.

    Hope this helps.

  12. Democrats value diversity and choices. They support abortion because they perceive the issue to be about choice. They really like diversity, alternative lifestyles, minorities, etc. They feel the government has an obligation to fulfill the needs of its citizens, hence welfare and universal healthcare. The social programs Democrats love require more spending, this requires higher taxes.

Republicans have traditional values. They value religion, family, service, and responsibility. They have always been proponents of individual rights. They value innocent life and oppose abortion because they view it as an issue of life and death. Republicans also like low government spending. They believe the government must protect citizens and give them the freedom to be whatever they choose. Its not the government's job to take care of you, its your job. Personal responsibility.

Hey Einstein: I ran DOJ stats. Our US legal system is 99.999% accurate. No innocent people get executed. Please don't deceive the public.

  13. I will make this simple for you. Conservatives believe that there is something existing within each person that can be built upon to make them self-sufficient, and thus, capable of helping others in need. Liberals believe that some are so disadvantaged that they don't have a prayer - and liberals are determined to keep it that way - to succeed in life, and they therefore support programs to provide for their needs - as long as they vote for Democrats.

  14. Republicans - anti environment and conservation, anti women's rights,  for big business and corporate control, anti s*x education,  for drill, drill, drill, etc.   Tend to adjust very slowly to things, not very innovative.  Do not believe in the right to personal privacy.   Prefer war to diplomacy.  Believe more in tax cuts to help the wealthy.   Satisfied pretty much with healthcare system the way it is.   Huge spenders (present admin)   Seem to be more hypocritical than Democrats.

Democrats- pro environment, pro women's rights,  for common working man,  pro s*x education, for alternative energy sources, etc.   Adapt to changing situations.   Believe in individual rights and privacy.   Prefer diplomacy to war.   Believe more in tax cuts to help the common man.  Seek to improve healthcare system, so all can have available.  Democrats are better on job creation according to data.   Data indicates that Democratic presidents are better for the economy than Republicans.

Unfortunately both parties are pretty much controlled by the corporations, lobbyist, etc.

Ha. Almost fell out of my chair when someone said Republicans are fiscally conservative.  What a laugh.

  15. The Democrats are for raising taxes big government and oddly enough they are for more gun laws. They are also against development so it is harder to get permits to build. They also like to spend money on special interests.Republicans are for tax cuts smaller gov.and the rite to bare arms. republicans also pay more attn. to national security.unlike Dem's. reps are pro life and against g*y marriage. There is more but thats it in the nut shell.
