Question:

Breaker blowing when power is turned off?

I just had a new room built and electric wire ran around the room. Last night we hooked up the closet light and turned it on. it works and all the outlets work. Ceiling Fan also works. However. When we turn the light switch off the breaker blows. Is the problem in the wiring of the ceiling light? It's connected black on black white on white. I read somewhere about hot wires being white sometimes instead of being neutral. Any ideas? I have plugged other stuff in the room with the lights on and never a prob. only when I turn that light off.....

  1. You may have two three-way switches connected to the light.  If so, one or both of them have been mis-wired.  If that is what has happened, putting both switches in the correct position will turn the light on but putting them in the opposite possition will cause a dead short and trip the breaker.  Have the electrician that installed the wiring and switchs come back and verify that they are connected correctly.
