Question:

Breaking Dawn: What did you not like about it?

Note: As common sense would suggest, if you haven't read the book and don't want spoilers, this post isn't the best place to be.

Firstly, can I mention, I am NEUTRAL (still on Team Switz) on the topic of whether Breaking Dawn was or was not a complete utter piece of trash. It was ok; it was surprising; some bits were strange but I'll live with it. But with stuff like people burning their copies (which thankfully has stopped as it was a bit strange considering all you did was burn your money), I decided to look deeper.

When I first read the reviews, I was expecting something that was a huge utter horror that was so bad it would burn your eyes out (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating), but it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting (suppose that it because I read too many bad reports and braced myself for the worst).

So now, after being 1 chapter away from the end. I want to ask what specifically was so bad about it? I'm not using this as a chance to target all the haters and convert them, nor am I using this to judge people. I'm just interest so I can make an educated view on what was good and what was bad. And besides, you get 10 points if you EXPLAIN your reason well. That's not too bad, right?

These are the main things I tend to hear about it:

1. Jake is such a pedophile in this book - Erhm, ok, I suppose it is a little strange considering he imprints on Bella's child (yes, it is different from Quil and Claire) but by the time Renesmee is 7 or something she is physically 21 and mentally centuries older. And besides, imprinting means they'll do anything to keep the person happy, including being a brother to them. That doesn't quite count as pedophilia does it? And the Bella issue there, there relationship didn't go too deep. And besides, the whole idea is completely weird so adding a bit more weirdness doesn't necessarily count as bad.

2. Renesmee is such a lame name - True, I was on the brink of laughing fits when I heard the nickname Nessie (Hahaha, Loch Ness Monster). But the idea is pretty creative, I mean, mixing the name of two parents. That's pretty creative. Besides, it was unique, it was meant to be unique, so it was ok, considering it wasn't over-the-top weird. And besides, at least she didn't call her Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii (as the person who I am sure is very happy they were allowed to change their name had).

3. The ending was too happy - That's a bad thing? Really? Would you have preferred everyone died painful and horrific deaths and Breaking Dawn was a book which made tons of people cry worse than New Moon? I had a friend who was seriously squeamish and was reading the series. She was happy it wasn't sad. As for no fighting. I admit, that was pretty lame, but violence isn't meant to be something we look forward to. And besides there was a little bit of violence when Jane and Alec began attacking.

4. It was too scary (some scenes were too visual) - I suppose that is completely up to your taste (well to be honest, the whole thing is).

I'll stop there. I'm sure there are plenty more reasons, but yeah, feel free to tell me your side on any of the points already given or any new ones you can think of. But explain them. I have a feeling a few people have already asked the question, but I ask it now as I am sure more of the fandom or ex-fandom have read it (and possible changed their views).

Oh and for all of you saying there was nothing wrong with it. That's peachy, this post is about what they didn't like about it, so as much as I appreciate the view, don't post "I liked it" unless you are going to explain.

Also, please don't turn this into a massive argument.

Thank you for bearing with this huge post that I didn't know I was capable of posting.

  1. Shouldn't you ask what was good about it?

I thought that Breaking Dawn was on a whole different level to the other books. I felt that Stephanie Meyer had improved and matured as a writer and really had a feel for her characters.

Onto Jake. I was angry at the beginning when he had imprinted on Renesmee, not because I thought it was paedophilia but because I just wanted Edward and Bella to love their daughter with all their heart and no one else (my opinion did change slightly when Bella and Jacob figured out that they weren't in love any more but best friends and that Jacob wasn't trying to crack onto her.)

Onto the name. Yes, Renesmee was bad! I thought it was too over the top and just a bit childish, clever how she was able to incorporate everyone's names, but still....

Onto the ending. I was dissapointed that the fight scene didn't eventuate to more and I posted my feelings as a question and received an interesting response. Meyer based the book on the Merchant of Venice so therefore the fight scene was wasn't an anti-climax, it was inevitable. A battle of the minds, also represented by the chess pieces on the cover (designed by Meyer herself.) I loved that it ended happily ever after, I was too connected and obsessed with the characters that if it did turn bad I don't know if I would've been able to cope!

Onto the 'too visual scenes.' Really? I thought the birth scene was so intense and I was on the edge of my seat reading it! This was a great scene and perfectly executed by Meyer, I had no idea what was going to happen next. As grouseme as it was this was my favorite scene!

So all in all, I loved this book and I hope that I was able to get across to you the reasonings behind my thoughts.

P.S My one major dissapointment and I think I may be the only one with this thought but I'll still say. I really wanted Edward to show more love toward Renesmee when she was born. I just didn't get the feeling that he (or Bell for that matter) had a very close connection. I wanted to read about Edward been a proud dad, didn't you? Sorry, it's really hard for me to put in words what I think about this, I don't know how to explain it.

  2. I think in general, it was an OKAY book. not as great as the other threee i have to say. I wasn't really rushing through to find the ending of it, it was obvious to me that the ending would have to do with beating the vollturi or something. nothing excited me. =l

    1.  i hated/liked the idea that bella turned into a vampire. i liked it because it sort of topped it off. what i hated was that it happened waaay too early into the book. I also hated the idea that she didnt really need edwards protection anymore, it kinda ruined the whole "romantic thing" between them.

    2. i found it HILARIOUS when bella first noticed that jake imprinted on renesmee. It was a good twist to the book, so uncalled for. a great idea! now jacob could finally be happy =)

    3. i liked the s*x/blonde jokes emmett and jacob used, it was a great way to add some mild humor to the book.

    4. As for the ending, weeeell, im not sure what to think about it. I mean i did like that it was a happy one, but then again, i would have liked a more sad ending, to make you feel more emotional at the ending XD i dont know why, but i like sad endings, you feel more into the story somehow when youre done =P ( i know this doesnt make sense, i just dont know how to explain it =P)

    5. overall, i thought this book was OK. i still think eclipse was my favourite cause of all the action and romannce in it. For some reason, this book really didnt top it off for me. The big turn down was that bella was pregant and immortal way to early in the book, i think she should have used that in a way to end the story somehow. I also hated that because she was immortal so early in the book, there wasn't any romance (the way edward would be so gentle, and protect her from everthing).

okok this is getting too long XD ill stop. anyways, this is just my opinion.

  3. i though it was a great book in general... i loved emmets s*x jokes, and jacobs blonde jokes, and all the witty lines, but i thought Edward should have displayed more affection 4 renesmee, and there should have at least been a big fight at the end.

i also have to say, when i started reading the "jacob" section i felt like throwing my book at the wall, but as i read on, i didn't mind it, and i actually ended up really enjoying it :)

... so overall i thought it was brillent, but there were bits that just annoyed the h**l out of me.

Still a massive twilight fan tho :p

  4. Who said I didn't like it?

  5. My BD Con List :

    1. The characters are so different from Twilight, New Moon etc. Okay, mainly Bella. Back in Twilight, she was timid and shy but now she's asking Edward for s*x. After reading Twilight for the first time, I never thought she'd be the one asking for more s*x.

    2. The plot - I wasn't exactly overjoyed that Bella got pregnant. Didn't like it.

    3. Renesmee - It's like a bad take on Albus Severus.

    4. Book 3 went on forever. Or at least for me it did. I was hoping there would be a fighting scene with the Volturi.

    5. The whole thing is too happy for me. Nothing life threatening ever happens to Bella. I know you said up there would you rather someone died? For me, I do.

    6. Not enough Alice scenes! (hehe, love her!)

Yeah, I know I sounded very very pessimistic there. I'm actually neutral, but I would have liked it more if it didn't connect onto the end of Eclipse, but oh well. I'm glad Jacob finally got someone even though it was Renesmee. He was so infatuated with Bella I really wished that he'd just imprint on someone.

  6. I liked the Book. True, there were a few things that made me think that Stephenie Meyer did not have enough time for this book and had to make up a few quick fixes.

I was really happy that the book had a happy ending, as I was dreading Edward or Bella would die or something.

My biggest problem with the Book were the haters - I avoided spoilers, but was still reading all the hater comments. I think I would have enjoyed it much more if I had not expected it to be so bad- which it wasn't, it was still an ok story.

  7. i will say i did like the book but i had problems with it too.

    a) totally agree with Renesmee being a lame name. i think she could have some up with something better and i didn't really like nessie as a nickname. b) i don't understand stand how edward is a vampire and can get someone pregnant. vampires don't pee, have saliva, but have sperm? yeah i didn't like that. the way i read it kinda reminded me of like a general hospital episode like omg! bellas pregnant dun dun dun!  sooo yeah

i looooooved jacob in this book. although honestly ever since edward left her the first time i loved jacob anyway so yeah :D and i thought the ending was good.

  8. Okay...where was Mike, Angela and Jessica? She only mentioned them once....:L

And people love tradegy. Why do you think Shakespeare is so popular?

  9. I didn't hate it or anything, I just felt like it was a completely different book from the others. To me, they didn't seem like Edward and Bella, it all got too adult, I found the pregnancy utterly pointless and stupid, it felt like a needless excuse for gore. I am now re-reading Twilight, and there is so much of a connection between E and B, which I didn't feel in this book. All they seemed to do was have s*x, they never expressed love for each other. And the whole Jacob/Renesmee thing annoyed me, as I liked it better when Jacob and Edward fought over Bella. I also felt I couldn't identify with Bella anymore once she was a mother and a vampire, it just didn't seem the same. It was as if Bella was suddenly 30 years old, and like I said I felt her relationship with Edward changed. I know she had to be turned into a vampire, but I didn't like the way it was handled. It also seemed RIDICULOUS that there was no fight at the end, I mean come on!! It made me feel really sad that this was the last we would hear from Bella etc, and I didn't feel satisfied enough to accept it as the end. :(

  10. I did like it

at first i wasnt happy with bella getting pregnant, i wanted to just yell at my book. but as i read on i didnt mind it

Jacob isnt a pediphile. when Nessie grows up she will have a choice to go with Jacob that way, but remember he'll have competion. (ull understand in last chapter).

Bella annoyed me that she was so sure it would be a bad end and being all precorsias. with the passports

but above all i liked it.

and i loved emmets s*x jokes.

    edit

    with forth answer

we dont know if hes proud or not

we'll find out in Midnight Sun

  11. Breaking Dawn...

Everytime i read a convincong post about this book, I tend to change my mind a bit. But for the most part this is my opinion:

I really did love how the wedding scene turned out and also the honeymoon.  But then i was so shocked about her pregnancy that i was a bit numb! Then i saw that the second book was from Jacob's point of view and just like someone mentioned above, i was just about ready to throw my book up against the wall. After i began reading again i started growing fond of Jacob, so it wasnt so bad. The thing that bothered me about the book was that the climax of the book was so early on! the most exciting part was Bella's almost dying! And then after that it was all so happy? i dont know exactly, but it was like i was expecting something else that was exciting. AS for the name, Renesmee, i didnt really like it much, but thats jsut me. The ending didnt really give me closure. I felt like that there was still more to tell. I guess i just need closure

  12. I know that everyones upset that edward didnt show much affection to nessie but if he didnt look after bella wen she was turned she could have hurt nessie also it says that he wasnt spending alot of time with her because he and carlise were trying to save nessie by trying to find out how to stop her fast growth

  13. I have mixed opinions about the book. It was written much differently to the others but really, is that a bad thing? The writing was much more mature, appealing to both younger and older readers.

I do not think Jake is a pedo, I mean, he didn't chose to imprint on her, it was forced. And like you said yourself, it means wanting the very best for that person, making sure they come no to harm and loving them more than yourself even. Whether they need a brother, a friend or a lover, that is what they are there for.

Renesmee is such a lame name... Well, I think it was creative. It took a while to get used to but now it seems normal. A unique name for a unique child.

The ending was too happy - I sort of agree with this. It seemed to be building up to something throughout the whole series and for nothing to happen was a bit of an anti-climax. I was rather hoping someone would die at the end, or Nessie would disappear. Bella and Edward didn't really need a child in their lives right then.

I would never call it scary but some scenes were a little explicit.

I think that the book was good. I felt sort of sad reading it because it felt like my dream of Twilight was being destroyed. I didn't like the fact that Bella became all maternal. She lost the innocent, 'Bellaness' about her which I couldn't get used to. It upset me that Edward became a little crazy too although I know these things were necessary to the plot.

I am glad Jacob found his soulmate in the end and glad that Edward and Bella were together. I too, am neutral. I can't chose between Edward or Jacob. Edward is almost perfect, if a little aggravating and too good, if you know what I mean, whereas Jacob so completely opposite that he's almost perfect too.

I'm glad you asked this question because I've been having mixed opinions since I read the book. I am glad I brought it although I wouldn't chose to read it as often as I read the others, simply because it's not such an easy read, and I have to think a little when reading.

  14. i liked it but it was rather dissapointing.

    i didnt like the following:

the fact that bella got prego.  it was soo STUPID!  omg lol

what kind of name is renesmee?

how there was so muchh s*x in it.  she could have stoped telling us about it after the first three times!  lol.

how jacob imprinted on renesmee.  pedifile?  hmm. i think so.

how there was no reall romance at all in the book.

it was the same thing through out the whole book.  jacobs point of veiw point bored me.  i wanted to get to bellas pov and read about her and edward.  but they never got to that.

how the characters all acted so different!

    anndd idk.

i just think stephanie meyer cold have done sooo much better with the book but was disstracted with the movie and just getting it out.

    just my opinionn=]
