Breaking EPL News: Arsene Wenger regrets losing Bothroyd as Sunderland win at Chelsea
Arsene Wenger, Arsenal’s long standing manager has come out and admitted that Arsenal lost Bothroyd in the early days of his career as the striker has recently been called up for the England national team squad for their friendly match
against France.
Arsenal had Jay Bothroyd in their youth academy where he earned his trade early on in his career but then the striker was forced to leave the club after he fell out with the youth academy manager, Liam Brady. Brady told Bothroyd that he
wasn’t need at the club after the striker threw a tantrum following his substitution in a reserve league game. Bothroyd has already scored fifteen goals this season, a tally that has allowed Cardiff City to climb to the top of the nPower league.
Wenger lamented on the fact that Bothroyd left Arsenal early on in his career as he said, “He is one of my regrets, he left very early. But I have said many times it is important a guy has a good career, even if he goes somewhere else.
It is better than to play in the reserves. He went down but has come back up again and we are all very proud of him at Arsenal."
The Frenchman said, "Sometimes it is only later they realize they not only have to have talent, but need to work as well. Sometimes to go down to the Championship, there is no better education. It is true, he had a little outcome that
you can have when you are 16 or 17 but he is a good guy, and he is classy; left-footed, strong body, fantastic technique. The incident didn't happen in the first-team group, it happened in the youth team. Liam Brady is responsible for that. They made the decision
and I didn't stand in the way because it was a disciplinary matter."
On the other hand, Steve Bruce remarked on his team’s three goal win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Nedum Onouha, Daniel Wellbeck and Asamoah Gyan were enough to fire the Black Cats to a surprise win as Sunderland bounced
back from the humiliation they suffered at the hands of Newcastle United a couple of weeks back. He went onto say, "Two weeks ago we were hung, drawn and quartered. We were looking for a response and got it. They have worked very hard to get over the Newcastle
defeat. It was the worst performance of my career two weeks ago and today was arguably the best. Today we have done okay. That's management; the ups and downs are pretty horrific."
Speaking on his team’s loss to Newcastle United which gave everyone at the Stadium of light a wakeup call, Nedum Onouha said, "For a lot of us that was the low point of our careers but we had to draw a line under it and we have done that."
He also commented on his brilliant goal against Chelsea as he said, "I got it 30 yards from goal on my left foot so I didn't want to shoot. The run was nice but the finish was scruffy. But I can't complain."
