Breaking EPL News: Manager Chris Hughton, goalkeeping coach Paul Barron fired by Newcastle United
Newcastle United have fired their manager Chris Hughton after a series of poor results which have seen the Magpies drop to 11th in the English Premier League. Paul Barron, the goalkeeping coach, has also been shown the
door along with the former Tottenham Hotspur boss.
Newcastle have just managed a single win in their last 6 Premier League matches and have scored 5 points from a possible 18.
Hughton’s sacking comes after Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
An official statement from the club was issued on Monday. It read, “Newcastle United Football Club have today parted company with manager Chris Hughton. Goalkeeping coach Paul Barron also leaves the club today. The board would
like to place on record their thanks to Chris for his considerable efforts during the club's transition from Championship to Premier League club.
“Chris has shown exceptional character and commitment since being appointed manager in October 2009. The club wishes him well in the future. Regrettably, the board now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is
needed to take the club forward. The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”
The news of his departure may come as a surprise to the many fans at St. James’ Park, as Chris was the man who guided the Magpies to Football Championship success in 2009/2010 and got the team promoted to the top flight of English
football. The club had also promised Hughton a contract extension at the end of the year.
Chris took charge of the club as caretaker manager, and afterwards made full manager in October of 2009. He enjoyed a successful time at the club and won 3 manager of the month awards in August, September and November last year.
Hughton successfully managed to promote Newcastle to the Premier League on 5th April 2009. 14 days later, the club clinched the Championship title when they beat Plymouth Argyle. The Magpies remained unbeaten at home
in the 2009-2010 season and scored a record 102 points in the campaign.
The Toon’s next game in the Premier League is against Liverpool FC on Saturday, 11th
December at Anfield.
