Breaking EPL News: Schmeichel backs Reina to come to Manchester United
According to latest reports, Manchester United’s legendary ex-goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is set to back Reina for a prospective move to Old Trafford. Liverpool’s current goalkeeper has been a subject of intense transfer speculation as
the fortunes of the Merseyside club have dwindled beyond control in the past two years. Peter Schmeichel himself was one of the greatest goalkeepers of his time as he played a key role in the treble of trophies that was won by the Red Devils in 1999, a treble
that consisted of F.A Cup, English Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League as well.
Peter was United’s captain when they lifted the Champions League in 1999 against Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp after scoring two late goals in the injury time of the match. Manchester United struggled to replace the big Danish keeper after
his first retirement from English football in 1999, after giving a chance to successive goalkeepers such as Tim Howard and Roy Carroll; Manchester United signed Edwin Van Der Saar in 2005 from Fulham. The Dutchman who turned 40 this year has been a solid figure
for the Red Devils in the past five years but now it is thought that he will retire at the end of the season and thus United will need to sign a new goalkeeper.
Schmeichel told the press, "I'm pretty sure they (Manchester United) would go for someone like Reina, I'm pretty sure that's what they are trying to do. You can look at talent, you can look at young, good players, you don't want that,
you want someone that can go in straight away and give performances in 80 per cent of the games that the No.1 choice goalkeeper will play for Manchester United. Too many goalkeepers have been through in and out of the doors at Manchester United and I think
now the general perception is, for this team to play well and win trophies, that position has to be someone who is of the very, very highest quality, but also with the right experience and that's why I think someone like Reina would fit the bill.”
The ex-Danish international went onto say, "The rumours are very, very strong around Old Trafford with this. A lot of goalkeepers are mentioned, but Reina seems to be the one that fits in the team and if he ever was to leave Liverpool,
which again there is a big, big rumour he will, Manchester United would be a great club for him to come to. I hope that someone like Pepe Reina will go to United when Edwin calls it a day and I hear rumours that he is going to leave Liverpool so for him to
go to Man United would be very, very good for us."
