Preston North End football club have sacked their manager Darren Ferguson in an attempt to stay put in the Championship.
The son of Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson had joined the club in January this year, following his impressive spell with Peterborough last season. Ferguson was given the task to get Preston into the Premier League and provide them with the much
needed consistency. That is something the 38 year old couldn’t provide as the side are currently bottom of the Championship table, five points behind the safety zone.
It seems that the management had enough of the 38 year old and thus reached the decision to terminate the Scotsman’s contract.
"At a board meeting held today the directors of Preston North End decided to terminate the position of Darren Ferguson as manager. The club expressed their appreciation of the efforts made by Darren but felt that the league position represented a significant
threat to the club and it was felt that a change of manager might bring better fortune," read a statement from the club.
Preston have managed to win just 5 Championship fixtures in 22 matches this season and also lost the final match of the year to Middlesbrough yesterday. The Scotsman had recently claimed his belief in the squad and asked for patience from fans and management.
However, that fell on deaf ears as the board had a totally different view and instead chose to show Ferguson the door.
This is the 38-year-old’s 2nd sacking of his managerial career so far, his first coming at Posh in November 2009. Ferguson has to be credited for bringing Posh to the Championship in the first place, as he managed successive promotions from lower
tier leagues.
Under Ferguson, Preston just managed to get out of the relegation zone last season as the Whites finished 17th then. Barry has always been compared to his father Sir Alex Ferguson, who is the most successful British manager in football history.
Barry was accused by the BBC of using his father’s name to tilt the transfer market, which has led to Sir Alex not talking to the channel since then.
