Breaking News: Carling Cup quarter final draws announced
The draws for the quarter finals of league cup have been announced, making some interesting ties for many top teams.
Interestingly, defending champions Manchester United would have to travel to Upton Park to face West Ham United. Manchester United have held on to the trophy for 2 straight seasons and would now want to achieve their first hatrick of league cups.
To do that, however, United would have to face a tough West Ham side. Despite not doing so well in the league this season, the Hammers have managed to stay firm in the league cup and special performance would be needed from Red Devils to overcome such odds.
The most interesting tie of the draw would be the unexpected midlands derby between Birmingham City and Aston Villa, with Alex Mcleish having the advantage of home crowd. Birmingham only recently lost their first home match at St. Andrews to Everton, after
not having lost even a single match since September 2009 and are strongest there. Aston Villa would have to be on their best if they are to pull an upset but it looks like Birmingham all the way.
Arsenal have a more favourable draw, as they are to face the low-lying Wigan Athletic at Emirates. The side had thrashed an in form Newcastle United 4-0 to book their place in the quarter finals and have thus been rewarded with a lesser opposition.
The only Championship side remaining in the competition is Ipswich Town, who now face West Bromwich Albion. West Brom thrashed Leicester City 4-0 away in the 4th round but would now have to face a slippery Ipswich Town under manager Roy Keane.
The draws are as follows:
Birmingham City Vs Aston Villa
Arsenal Vs Wigan Athletic
West Ham United Vs Manchester United
Ipswich Town Vs West Bromwich Albion
