Breaking News: Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham can become a great side, says Gary Lineker
Gary Lineker, ex-English national team striker as well as a former Tottenham player has come out and given his backing to Tottenham Hotspurs under Harry Redknapp. The ex-English national team player said that Tottenham can become one of the ‘Great Spurs’
sides under Redknapp’s guidance. Recently, Tottenham won their second last UEFA Champions’ League group stage game at the White Hart Lane against Werder Bremen. The win against Bremen has sealed Tottenham’s place in the last sixteen teams of the competition.
During the course of their group stage campaign, Spurs have bested the likes of Inter Milan and F.C Twente. The former Tottenham target man said, "Spurs are doing brilliantly. They need to be a bit more resilient and stronger but they have the potential
to become one of the great Spurs sides if they can make themselves a little harder to penetrate.”
Lineker added, "It's their first go in the Champions League and they have set the competition alight in their attitude and the way they've played. They have got a lot of qualities, they have a terrific squad and a big squad, a lot of good players and I think
Harry is right that they are two or three short of challenging for honors."
Tottenham’s best player so far in the 2010-2011 league and European cup season has been Gareth Bale. The Welsh international has come on leaps and bounds since last season, his hatrick against Inter Milan at San Siro almost inspired a full Spurs comeback
against the current holders of the UEFA Champions League title but the Londoners lost 4-3 in the end.
However, Lineker was complimentary of Bale as he said, "Bale could be potentially a truly great player. He can do it all. He can run all day and he's quick, which is an unusual combination, he's powerful, his delivery is very precise, he takes all the dead
balls, got a wonderful left foot, he's competitive, works hard, seems to have a good head on his shoulders. If he's fortunate to avoid injury he could be one of the world's best."
Lineker gave these remarks at the Wembley Stadium, which is set to be the UEFA Champions League final’s host stadium in next year’s May. Next week, Lineker will travel to Zurich in order to play his due part in England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup.
Gary Lineker concluded by saying, "I would go along the lines of what will be the best thing for football, and I think that would be our bid. If you ask the players where they would want to play a World Cup in 2018 they would say our country. A lot of World
Cups suffer because of the conditions and we would have perfect conditions. Our weather is not great but it is for football. You don't have to deal with heat, altitude, you have great conditions, great pitches, grounds where the stands are right on top of
the pitch which creates the atmosphere that players love to play in. Why do you think so many players love coming to play here? Not just for the financial element but because it is such a buzz playing here."
