Breaking News: Michael Owen hints retirement
Manchester United striker Michael Owen has expressed a possible retirement plan, should United not renew his contract by the end of this season.
The 30 year old striker has not had the best of careers with Red Devils since his arrival at the club two seasons ago. United agreed a 2 year contract with former Liverpool forward, but couldn’t make an impact since his arrival. The player has only made
6 Premier League starts since his arrival last season and his current deal expires by the end of this season.
It is very unlikely that United would extend his stay at Old Trafford, the major reason being the increase in form of youngsters Javier Hernandez and Federico Macheda. Both of them have been chosen instead the experienced Merseyside player, despite having
a good scoring record. The player has scored 12 goals in 38 appearances for the Manchester based club, 10 of them coming in 14 starts. Owen scored his first Champions league hatrick last season against Besiktas and scored many important goals for United last
season.
However, Owen has suggested he would rather quit football altogether rather than going in a low lying club, should United not offer him a contract extension.
"I would honestly love to stay but you will have to ask the manager about the long term. I could score at this level for many years and would love it to be at a top club like United. Whether I would want to be dropping down to a poorer Premier League team,
I don't know. Yes I could score goals but I would probably get less opportunities and less enjoyment. I just don't feel my game is suited to a team that is really struggling. I won't drop down leagues", stated the 30 year old striker.
Owen insisted that he has always been playing in big clubs as well with struggling teams and it’s easy to spot which any player would prefer. He added that playing in a club like United is playing with quality and class, something clubs of lesser status
cannot provide. The player already confirmed a possible job should he call it a day someday, with club management being his first and foremost priority. Owen confirmed that he was attending management school and was on the 2nd stage of his coaching
diploma.
Despite being a horse racing fan his entire career, Owen insisted he would prefer to go forward in football, because that is what he loves doing. By the end of this season, United would be welcoming the possible return of loan players Mame Biram Diouf (Blackburn
Rovers) and Danny Welbeck (Sunderland). Both of them have spent the current season on loan to other clubs and would love to come back and pursue their career at United. However, it would be up to the manager to decide the usefulness of the former Real Madrid
forward.
