Breaking News: Middlesbrough keen to cash in on David Wheater’s talent
Middlesbrough’s manager Tony Mowbray has come out and made it clear that Middlesbrough F.C will not let David Wheater leave the Tyneside club on a free transfer in the summer of 2011. The past couple of weeks have been quite uncomfortable ones for Middlesbrough
as David Wheater’s contract situation has come out into the open through media reports. The defender who is under the radar of teams such as Arsenal and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in the English Premier League is known for his ability to head the ball as well as make last
ditch challenges in the penalty area.
Despite the fact that the centre back is short on experience, Premier League clubs are keen on securing his signature due to the immense talent that he has showcased already during his time at Middlesbrough. Wheater was part of the Middlesbrough side that
was relegated from the English Premier League in the 2008-2009 season. It was a particularly heart breaking moment for all the Middlesbrough fans as their side was knocked out of the English Premier League on the very last day of the season.
Middlesbrough current manager, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tony-c35440 Mowbray who was in-charge of West Bromwich Albion in the past is heading the club’s charge to cash in on David Wheater’s talent. Wheater currently has only a single year left on his contract with Middlesbrough and with
Premier League clubs on the horizon, there is a very real possibility that the defender will part ways with his employers by making use of the Bosman ruling.
Bosman ruling gives Wheater an option to part ways with Middlesbrough due to the fact that he has less than 12 months left on his contract with the club. If David does indeed opt for the Bosman option then Middlesbrough will not receive any transfer fee
for the player’s transfer to any other club side.
Tony Mowbray expanded on the precariously situation as he stated, "You look at David Wheater and you have to look at the contractual side of where we are as a football club. He has got six months to go. He's a player who has openly said he's a huge Boro
fan, his family are huge Boro fans and he would love to be here.”
He added that David does want to play in the English Premier League and in an ideal world he would do that but Middlesbrough are currently languishing in the Championship at the moment. Tony further emphasized the fact that Wheater had come through the academy
ranks at Middlesbrough and belongs to the club because of his cultural ties to the city of Middlesbrough.
Mowbray concluded by stating, "He has given us a lot of good years, of course, but I think it works both ways. We find ourselves in a situation where we need something back for a player that we can try to re-invest back into the team, potentially, rather
than him walking away on a Bosman."
