Breaking News: Philadelphia Flyers win 3-1 against the New York Islanders
The 68th match of the NHL preseason saw the Philadelphia Flyers up against the New York Islanders on their home at the Wells Fargo Centre. A total attendance of 18,000 was observed at the start of the match, and at the end the Philadelphia Flyers
managed to emerge victorious 3-1 just a while ago.
First period
The first period was totally dominated by the offensive plays of the home team, Philadelphia Flyers. Though they couldn’t score, they managed to break past the New York Islanders defence quite often. They were rewarded for their constant hard work in the
10th minute when James Van Riemsdyk scored for the Flyers.
After the restart, the Philadelphia took possession with the first shot score in the 12th minute again. This time the goal credentials went to Jeff Carter’s 79 feet splendid shot. The New York Islanders started to come up with good shots of their
own and break past the Philadelphia Flyers defence, but couldn’t manage to score. However, the Flyers were looking to demolish the New York Islanders when they scored again in the last minute of the first period. The goal was a result of Jeff Carter shot that
took the score to 3-0 at the end of the first period. The Islanders managed to come up with 11 goal attempts but weren’t able to score.
Second period
Everybody was expecting the next period to be more exciting than the last one. This was not to be, as neither of the teams was able to score a goal. Both teams managed to come up with decent goal attempts, but all of these couldn’t find the back of the net.
The New York Islanders managed to make 10 goal attempts out of which two could have turned into goal had it been for an Islander’s player in the right position on the right time. Unfortunately the 3 goal deficit stood there, and it was highly unlikely that
they would score given the splendid goalkeeping of the Philadelphia Flyers goal keeper.
The Detroit Red Wings concentrated more on the defence rather than the offence since they had 3 goals to their advantage. In order to maintain the lead they had to be tight in defence, which they surely were. Despite their score lead, coupled with their
defence was the impressive offensive skill they offered and managed 13 goal attempts during the second period.
Third period
The third period saw the game being played in the same flow as the second period. The difference came in the 7th minute when the New York Islanders managed to score through Krys Kolanos. This took the score to 3-1 and the Islanders pressed forward
in search of two more goals.
However, the Philadelphia Flyers dominated play from then onwards forming a non-porous defence. This defence was very quickly turned into a fast-breaking offensive unit once the opposition lost possession in their half.
At the end of the period, the New York Islanders managed 12 goal attempts out of which they scored once. The Philadelphia Flyers ended the period with 10 shots out of which none were netted.
Jeff Carter, centre of the Philadelphia Flyers was declared the star selection of the match.
