Breaking News: Rooney apologizes to fans as a return to form is foreseen for the Englishman
Rooney has come out and said sorry to Manchester United’s fans after he returned to action for the Red Devils in mid-week against Rangers. UEFA Champions League’s group stages saw United taking on Rangers at the Ibrox stadium, after a tense first 80 minutes, Manchester United were awarded a penalty kick which Wayne Rooney converted for the former European Champions. United ran out as eventual winners by a goal to nil against Rangers and in doing so they also sealed their place in the last 16 teams of the UEFA Champions League competition.
Wayne recently came out and said, "I feel like I have apologized to the fans but everyone keeps saying that I haven't. If that is the case, then I apologize for my side of things. I have made my point clear since I signed my contract that I am committed to this club for the long term. I want to be successful here. Everyone is saying that I was definitely going to Manchester City. Believe me if I had gone it wouldn't have been in England."
Rooney was in a contentious position early on in the season as he came out and declared that he had decided not to sign a new contract with United because he doubted the club’s ambitions. Wayne changed his mind within 48 hours of the statement in question as he signed a new five year contract with the Manchester club.
United’s talismanic striker added, "Of course. You see so many players leave this club and not do so well so I am delighted to have stayed. I spoke with the manager and (chief executive) David Gill. They reassured me the club was moving forward and from that it took maybe two or three hours to negotiate my contract and sign it," revealed the England forward. It wasn't a distraction to my football because I haven't played that much but it was a distraction overall. I am just happy it is all over now. I want to put it behind me and look forward."
Rooney went onto say on his return to action, "Mentally I have been okay because the football has not been going well and other things have happened, everyone has put it down to not being mentally strong enough. But I am. Obviously the most important thing for me at the minute is to play and score goals."
Wayne played some part in United’s last league match against Wigan, an encounter they won by two goals to nil at Old Trafford. Rooney is being eased back into action for the Red Devils, as Sir Alex is well aware of what fitness issues can emerge if players are rushed back to matches.
The Englishman has no doubt been frustrated with his injuries but he admitted that he was comfortable with the way things were going for him. Rooney said, "I wasn't going to argue with the manager. I needed to get the training in and if that is what they wanted me to do I was happy to do it. Going to the States has helped a lot. Normally when I have been injured it has taken me four or five games to feel I was back to full fitness and I would feel it in the last 20 minutes of matches. Against Rangers I felt good in the last 20 minutes."
