Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has backed former team mate for making the right choice by signing a long term contract with the club.
Ronaldo spent 6 successful years with Manchester United since joining the club in 2003. The player went on to become the first Manchester United player to win a FIFA World Player of the year award in nearly 40 years and has won every competition
with the Manchester based club. The player has made 292 appearances with the Red Devils, scoring 118 goals with 61 assists.
At his time with Manchester United, Ronaldo was close friends with Wayne Rooney and both formed a formidable partnership up front. It was this partnership which led to the second golden years of United from the years 2006-2009, where the
side won three premier league titles along with one UEFA Champions league. However, in the summer of 2009, Ronaldo moved to Spain to play in his favourite club, Real Madrid, in a deal worth 80 Million pounds.
Nevertheless, the 25 year holds great respect for his former club and is happy that Rooney has committed his long term future with the Red Devils. There were speculations Rooney last week, where had openly expressed his desire to leave
the club he had served for 6 years and refused to sign a contract offered by the United management.
The reason behind such a shock decision was the concern of the current quality of the squad along with future promises. In his own words, Rooney questioned United’s "continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world",
but ended the tension by signing a five year contract with the premier league club.
There were not many quality players hired when Ronaldo left in 2009, which led United to slip to the second spot in the league and rivals Chelsea went on to win a domestic double last season. The Red Devils had to do with just a Carling
Cup trophy and Rooney expressed his concern following to major improvements in squad this year as well.
After disclosing his intention to leave the club in Media, the bond between Rooney and Man United seemed almost beyond repair and Real Madrid emerged as the favourites to snap up the unsettled striker. However, Ronaldo claimed Rooney had
done the right thing to sign his contract with Manchester United, as that may be the best club for Wayne Rooney.
“Rooney knows what's best for his career so we have to respect his decisions. I think the best club for him is in Manchester, of course,” claimed the former Man United player.
