Breaking News: Ryan Babel to join Tottenham Hotspurs on a season long loan
Tottenham Hotspurs have reportedly gone for a move to sign Liverpool forward Ryan Babel, following the inability to sign 4 high profile strikers in the last 48 hours.
Tottenham Hotspurs have tried to tempt the likes of Luis Fabiano, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Emmanuel Adebayor and Giuseppe Rossi, but have seen their bids utterly rejected. Spurs have failed to follow through their European spoils as they lost 1-0 to low lying Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club only has two recognizable strikers in the form of Jermaine Defoe and Peter Crouch. Both of them cannot possibly play all the fixtures of the premier league, the FA Cup, the Carling Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
The Spurs now turn to Liverpool to lend them Ryan Babel on a season long loan but it is understood that the Merseyside club would consider a permanent switch. Liverpool look to regain some part of their 11.5 million investment in the Dutch international three years ago, who joined the Reds from Ajax. It is believed that Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has become restless in his attempts to sign a big name forward, which he believes is instrumental to enable the club to establish itself in the UEFA Champions League.
Spurs defeated the Swiss side Young Boys 4-0 at White Hart Lane, providing the much needed finances for Chairman Daniel Levy to laud a new striker. The club was after the signature of Luis Fabiano, but the Brazilian striker signed a 2 year extension with Sevilla yesterday. Klaas Jan Huntelaar was also a prospect signing, but he too has made his switch from Milan to Schalke 04. The Chairman then looked to sign Villarreal Hit man Rossi, but reports suggest that negotiations between the two clubs fell over the transfer fee. Spurs chairman then turned to rivals Manchester City, in an attempt to lure Togo International Emmanuel Adebayor from the Eastlands. The high spending club has rejected the bid as they don’t wish to offload players to league rivals. The club went on in confirming that City has no plans of selling off Adebayor in the summer transfer window.
Babel now becomes the fifth target for Spurs in the matter of 48 hours as they know that Defoe and Crouch can only be replaced by Robbie Keane. Keane is likely to leave Spurs this season by the time the transfer window officially ends.
In over 100 appearances for Ajax, the Dutch only scored 20 odd goals. In his time with Liverpool, Babel has managed only cameo appearances for the club and has never become a full part of the starting XI. At Liverpool, he has made 130 appearances, managing only 21 goals. If the deals follow through, Spurs hunger for a replacement for a striker would finally be quenched and they might just be able to establish themselves in the league as well as in Europe.
