Breaking News: Shay Given for a shock move to Manchester United
Unsettled Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given has expressed his desire to leave his current club and neighbours Manchester United top the list of potential buyers of the 34 year old.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper has not made a single appearance for his club this season and is forced to make an appearance for the reserves squad. The former Newcastle United player moved to City last season and did extremely well with the Eastlands.
Yet, with the emergence of 23 year old Joe Hart in the squad, Shay Given fell down the pecking order under manager Roberto Mancini and has not made a single appearance since the start of this season. The player has made a total of 547 premier league appearances
since his arrival in Blackburn Rovers in 1994. Given spent almost 10 years with Newcastle United but left the club as the Magpies were relegated last season.
Shay Given was responsible for ending Frank Lampard’s three and a half year penalty scoring run, when Given stopped Lampard’s penalty towards the end of last season. Given was also voted the premier league goalkeeper of the season twice, first in 2001 and
then in 2005. The player has also made 102 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national football team, which made him the most capped Irish goalkeeper of the country.
Manchester United are expected to sign the 34 year old, as a long term replacement of 40 year old Edwin Van Der Sar, who is expected to retire by the end of this season. Owing to his experience in the premier league and his undeniable quality in between
the post, Sir Alex Ferguson would be more than happy to sign the 34 year old on a long term deal. Ferguson have always signed players who have performed well against them and Given played exceptionally well all of the Manchester derbies played last season.
Sources inside the City camp have claimed that Shay Given is extremely disappointed with the way he has been ignored by manager Roberto Mancini and is open to any negotiations with the 18 time premier league Champions. Given has vowed to teach his current
employers a lesson for not giving him first team opportunities and would prefer to move to United rather than any other club. There were immense speculations surrounding Given when he left Newcastle United last season, as United were interested in signing
the Irishman. However, City, owing to their financial superiority won the wage war and signed the 34 year old on a 4 year deal.
More information regarding this subject can be expected in the coming weeks and something may well solidify come the January’s transfer window.
