Breaking News - Tennis: No. 1 Indian Somdev Devvarman honoured at Tripura ceremony
India’s Number 1 player Somdev Devvarman recently announced his desire to take his country to a Davis Cup victory during his professional career. The player stated, “India have entered in the World Group of tennis. My dream is to bring the Davis Cup title
for my country.”
The upcoming tennis player was awarded at a felicitation by the Tripura government. He was given a standing ovation for his performance in the world of sports. Devvarman seemed delighted by this recognition, as he said, “The future of Tripura's sports is
bright as hundreds of talented players are coming up. My parents' all out support helped me a lot to became a tennis player.”
Somdev Devvarman, who belongs to Tripura’s royal family, won two gold medals in the past month at the Guanghzou Asian Games. Before that, he also took away a record breaking gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. He was impressed by the presence
of hundreds of his fans at the felicitation, as he added, “I love to play tennis and fly the tricolour abroad. I enjoy playing on behalf of my country.”
Other notable figures present at the event were Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Sardar, Sports Minister Tapan Chakraborty, Assembly Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath and also some members of the cabinet. Devvarman’s parents Pravanjan Kishore Devvarman and
Ranjana were also present.
The Chief Minister commended Somdev Devvarman, saying, “You have become an immense source of inspiration for all the sportspersons in India as well as in Tripura. The people of Tripura, along with the rest of the country, would be happy to see your upcoming
successes and feats in the international arena.. we strongly believe that Somdev would win gold medals in the Olympic Games too.”
Manik Sardar added that Somdev’s success was an indicator of the amount of talent present in northeast India. He stated that young stars needed a platform or an opportunity to prove their abilities.
A gold medal with the face of Rabindranath Tigore was also awarded to Somdev Devvarman, along with a tennis racket made of silver, five lac rupees in cash and one plaque.
