Breaking News: Tottenham Hotspurs sign Bongani Khumalo
Premier League club Tottenham Hotspurs have agreed the signing of South African centre-back Bongani Khumalo, according to the club’s website. The player used to play in Supersport United previously but has agreed a pre-contract with the
North London club.
A pre-contract agreement has been reached for the 23-year-old to join Spurs when the transfer window re-opens in January, subject to a work permit being granted in January. Khumalo had a trail with Spurs in September and manager Harry
Redknapp was greatly impressed by work rate of the centre back. Khumalo’s arrival at the club would be welcomed by the manager owing to deteriorating defensive oppositions in the Spurs camp, where all the first choice centre backs have suffered from injuries.
It was because of Spurs good relationship and partnership with SuperSport United for the past 3 seasons that Khumalo has ended up at White Hart Lane. According to reports, Khumalo cost Redknapp under 1 million pounds and the 23 year old
was delighted to be part of the Spurs side.
"He's not expensive. We had him over on trial and we like him. He's got potential and we've got a tie-up with the club SuperSport so we've taken him on”, claimed the Spurs coach. The manager was delighted to give chance to Khumalo as the
player came from a rather poor family and had no chance of being anything big had he stayed at SuperSport United.
"It will be a great chance for the kid. He's a great lad. He comes from a poor background and he's desperate for a chance, and we're going to give him a chance", explained Harry Redknapp. Khumalo was part of the South African side which
hosted the 2010 World Cup and featured in all three World Cup fixtures. The centre back scored his first World Cup goal, when South Africa thrashed France 2-1 in the final fixture of group stages.
Right after the tournament, media starting linking the 23 year old to the North London club and the player himself quoted that:
"I have always wanted to play in England and obviously in the Premier League, and it would be a dream to move to Tottenham”.
The player also stated that it would be more than a dream to play against the Europe’s elite in the UEFA Champions league and would’ve done anything to play there.
"I think the Champions League is the closest level to the World Cup in terms of quality and the play, so it would be great to make the move", stated the 23 year old. The player has made over 70 appearances for the South African club,
scoring 8 times.
