Breaking News: Wesley Sneijder extends Inter Milan stay
UEFA Midfielder of the year Wesley Sneijder has inked a new deal with the Italian and European Champions Inter Milan. The new contract is expected to keep the 26 year old at the club till 2015.
The Dutch International joined the Italian club last season from Spanish Giants Real Madrid and has become one of the top midfielders in Europe. In a meeting with the major shareholders last night, Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti confirmed that the
Dutch star had inked a new deal with the club.
The contract signing would finally put an end to a yearlong speculation linking the 26 year old toward a possible move to English Giants Manchester United. The Red Devils made a move for the midfielder this summer but Inter Milan were not interested. Sneijder
himself had stated that should any deal from the Premier League club may well be too hard to reject and would love to play some part of his career with the Red Devils.
It was Sneijder’s brilliant performance in both League and Europe that guided Inter Milan to their first ever treble. Sneijder was awarded with the UEFA Footballer of the year a few months back and had a phenomenal season with the Italian Giants. In his
41 appearances, the player scored 10 times and made 20 goals for his teams. It was Sneijder’s undeniable impact on the team that led to their first Champions league trophy in 50 years.
However, Sneijder shone the brightest in this summer’s FIFA World Cup, where was he was the best player for finalists Netherlands. Despite being a midfielder, Sneijder scored more goals than any of the Dutch strikers as the player bagged 5 goals in the entire
tournament. The player was level in terms of goals with David Villa, Diego Forlan and Thomas Muller, but it was Muller who was awarded the Golden Boot owing to him scoring most goals in fewest minutes. That led to Sneijder being nominated for the FIFA Ballon
d’Or award and is in pole position to winning the prestigious accolade.
"The fans will be happy above all else because we have today reached an agreement with Wesley Sneijder for a contract extension until 2015. Sneijder became a key player for Inter last season and will be this year, and for many years to come. The negotiations
started a despite the fact he had a long time to go on his old deal (which ran out in 2013) but with mutual satisfaction they were completed this morning,” stated the Inter Milan President.
Manchester United would now have to look elsewhere for their long term replacement of Paul Scholes, as it would cost them a fortune to convince the 26 year old away from San Siro.
