Alicia Molik and Jelena Dokic clear opening rounds of Australian Open Wild Card playoffs
Former World No.4 Jelena Dokic managed a victory at the playoffs for a wild card entry into the 2011 Australian Open event, along with former World No. 8 Alicia Molik. Dokic managed to defeat Viktorija Rajicic in straight sets
6-2, 6-2, while Molik ended the 19-year old Jade Hopper’s Australian Open campaign for 2011. However, Hopper still shows a considerable amount of promise, she is the daughter of coach Gavin, who has worked with Mark Philippoussis and is currently mentoring
Jarmila Groth.
The woman’s wild card playoffs are held in the Round-robin format.
Dutch players Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis to make a brief comeback
In February 2011, the retired doubles duo from Netherlands will be making their way back to the Associaition of Tennis Professionals for a brief reunion at the ABN Amro tournament. The event, held in Rotterdam, will be played by
Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis in order to raise money for the Richard Krajicek Foundation. Krajicek is a former professional tennis player, also from The Netherlands and is the tournament director of the ABN Amro tournament.
Between the years 1991 and 1998, Haarhuis and Eltingh teamed up to win 39 doubles career titles together.
International Tennis Federation announces 2010 ITF World Champion awards
The International Tennis Federation or the ITF announced it’s Awards earlier today, crowning World No.1s Rafael Nadal and Caroline Wozniacki World Champions for the year 2010.
Rafael Nadal managed to win three Grand Slams this year, only missing out on the Aussie Open. He also took away the 2010 US Open title for the first time, completing his career Grand Slam. He is winning the ITF award for the second
time. On the other hand, Caroline ‘Sunshine’ Wozniacki has won six WTA tour titles this year and jumped Serena Williams to become World No.1. She has not yet won a Grand Slam, and this is her first ITF award.
Nadal made a superb comeback in 2010 from a mediocre season, and said, “After a difficult year in 2009, it was an amazing feeling to regain the No. 1 ranking and finally win the U.S. Open.”
In the doubles division, American brothers Bob and Mike Bryan took away the award while Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta won the women’s award.
