Question:

Breaking a Lease...kind of...?

My roommate and I have differences that we can't live with and are signed on a lease together for the next calendar year. I moved home and by contract, I still owe normal months rent. The only way that I understand I can be removed from the lease is by bringing in a sublessor and having them take my spot on the lease.

The problem is that the (ex)roommate of course has no desire to fill the empty space (which is she is loving by the way) that i used to be in because she is still only paying her half. If she were to "kick me out," she would be responsible for the entire rent and I would be off the lease.

At this point, it seems that she likes nobody I have found to sublet. I have found 14 people interested in the offer and she keeps saying "no."

Ultimately what I need to know is if there is legal number (IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN) of times she can say "no" before I can make a case and be removed from the lease do to her not allowing anyone else to come in and sublet.

I'm not sure where I can even start looking...

Thanks for your time!

  1. I would talk to the person you are leasing from, they might be able to do something to help you. Other wise maybe you can move back in and make her life h**l untill she aggrees :)

  2. call judge judy, she loves these cases. you should be able to get out of it

  3. Does your lease even allow you to sublet?  You might not be able to even if she finally agreed to someone. And why would she agree, anyway?  She's got a private apartment at half price.

You signed the lease - sorry, but you're probably stuck with it.
