Breaking down Shea Weber's huge offer by Philadelphia Flyers -NHL Special
Nashville Predators were probably not expecting it, but it was bound to happen sooner or later as they continued to cross deadline after deadline, testing the patience of a number of clubs around the National Hockey League (NHL).
Philadelphia Flyers finally lost it and offered a huge 14-year contract to the league’s top defender and Nashville Predators captain, Shea Weber. The offer is reported to be worth $110 million after it was confirmed in the team’s official press release.
Weber obviously signed on to that offer, but recently, the Nashville Predators have announced that they will most probably meet it, if not exceed the defenseman’s expectations, which comes as a good sign according his agent, Jarrett Bousquet of Titan Sports.
"We are in receipt of the offer sheet signed between the Philadelphia Flyers and Shea Weber," Nashville general manager, David Poile, said in the statement. "Under the rules pertaining to an offer sheet, the Predators have one week to decide whether to match or accept the compensation. We have stated previously that, should a team enter into an offer sheet with Shea, our intention would be to match and retain Shea. Our ownership has provided us with the necessary resources to build a Stanley Cup-winning team.”
According to the general manager, there are a number of complexities of the offer sheet that the team is reviewing and will come out with a final answer in due time after a thorough review. Not taking an regretful steps is Poile’s number-one priority for sure, making it a better decision for both stake holders in the long run.
The 26-year-old would most definitely like to stay with his original draft team that picked him up as the 49th overall selection during round-two of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and leaving for another club after such a long time is never easy. But if Nashville fails to play their part, Weber would be left with no choice.
What Nashville needs to do is find a replacement for lost defender and right hand of Shea Weber, Ryan Suter. The 27-year-old signed on with Minnesota Wild to a mega, 13-year, $98 million deal which has left a gap in the Predators defensive line. Keeping Weber is just something that comes to mind and of high priority for sure.
Philadelphia Flyers are not the only franchise on Weber’s radar, which definitely does not come as a surprise. The defender is also reported to have met with the New York Rangers, Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks ever since he officially became a free agent earlier in July.
