Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has been left out of the club’s Champions League side.
Hargreaves, who joined Manchester United for 18 million pounds in the summer of 2007, has played just one season with the side before getting injured. He ruptured his Achilles tendon and made a brief comeback in the 2009-10 season. His first start in nearly
two years ended in a disaster when he lasted just five minutes on the pitch before being substituted owing to a hamstring problem.
There is no timeline on Hargreaves’ probable recovery and it is highly unlikely that he would be given a new contract by the end of the 2010-11 season. Sir Alex Ferguson has now omitted the 29-year-old midfielder out of the Champions League squad but he
would still be eligible to play in the Premier League whenever he returns.
Hargreaves spent the entire two years working on the injury and underwent multiple operations and rehabilitation programmes. He was forced to sit out the pre-season campaign in the USA in the summer since he was consulting a renowned specialist to get help
on his injuries. It is very unfortunate for a player of his talent for trying so hard to remain fit, yet failing in every attempt.
Manchester United have fared well without the services of the former Bayern Munich player for the past two years. His impact on the team was evident in the 2007-08 Champions League where he played in every position he was given by the manager. His crosses,
delivery and defensive positioning when he played right back were outstanding. He has also won the Premier League and Champions League crowns with Manchester United.
However, it seems that his days may be numbered with the Reds, as the manager has given no return date for the player. Hargreaves himself has stated that should he fail to make a comeback, he would quit football altogether.
