Breaking slate??

Question

I am wondering if anyone knows a safe way to break up slate squares? My husband and I had put edging up around our pool, and ran out, so I took some of our broken up slate and used that after we ran out of the plastic stuff. Well, he likes the way it looks (so do I), but I didn't know if there was a safe way to break it up.

a chisel and hammer.  Just wear safety glasses.
