  1. U will probably be able to do that, but let me tell u one thing: 20 seconds in running is a long time. You're in 8th grade an u're getting 5:20! That is awsome!! Next mile u do, try running a tad bit faster! I knoiw u can do it!

  2. this is how i did it...wear a watch during the race....your first lap has to be under 1:15 second under 2:30 third under 3:45 and of course fourth under 5:00...im not fast or anything..my fastest now is 4:49

  3. Dude W, is giving you pretty good advice, but I'd be careful about the word "under." If three of your laps are exactly at 1:15, only one of them needs to be under.

Better to say that your first lap must be VERY NEAR 1:15. Most young milers make the mistake of going out way too fast on the first lap. 1:15 should be your target. If you run that first lap in 1:10 you are really hurting your chances of breaking five because you overspent yourself.

But don't save yourself until the last lap either. Get the first three laps right and the fourth lap should take care of itself.

When I ran my best mile, my splits were 65, 66, 63 and 67 — 4:21.3. My third lap was actually the fastest. I knew I couldn't win this race, but I was determined to be third. I don't even remember who the fourth guy was because I left him so far in the dirt on Lap 3. The winner set a new record for my college that day; I think it was 4:13.6. Second place was right with him.

But my pace control was near perfect. I intended to run the third lap as my fastest. It was in the plan because I was on the distance side rather than the sprint side of the mile.

Learn to get those first three laps right, and you'll never run slower than 5 again. You'll laugh at five-minute guys.

  4. Training is the key to improving your mile time, you have to mix up your training so that some days you do speed work 100 yard dash 10 times, 220 yards 5 times 440 yards 5 times, and 330 yards 2 times and other days you do a mile and a quarter so you can work on your form, the better your from is the less effort it takes to run,  you will start to see your time improve,,, I know you will do, so get out there and train.
