Question:

Breaking the coffee habit. Substitute other than tea, cocoa, or grain coffees?

I have a bad coffee habit (like many of us) and I'm wondering if anyone might suggest an interesting substitute. I've used tea, hot cocoa, and the sort of grain wheat/barley substitutes such as Caffix. It would be nice if Walmart would at least carry the grain beverages though.

  1. i dont drink tea or coffee in my religion...try Caro

  2. Yerba Mate is a good sub for a variety of reasons.  It has a cousin of caffeine (xanthine) that will give you a similar buzz, but there is no withdrawal if you go a day without it.

I used to get it as a latte with vanilla syrup in it when I had the bucks to blow on it.

Celestial Seasonings makes it as "Morning Thunder" which also has some cinnamon in it I think.

  3. I used to also have a severe coffee (and caffeine) problem.  I eventually gave up trying to find a substitue and just cut out all caffeinated beverages.  The first week is the worst but then I felt so much better.

So depending on why you want to cut down on coffee I would have several suggextions.

If you still want to drink something war but not drink coffee I would suggest herbal teas or just warm water with lemon.

If you want something caffenated try sodas (although these are even worse for you then coffee)

if you are trying to get rid of all caffeine and need something to drink I would suggest carbonated water as a replacement for soda.  And tea as a replacement for coffee.

Just one more tip.  If you have problems waking up in the morning without caffeine do what I do.  Get up, immedietly take a hot shower.  Then drink a glass of juice, take a multivitamin and grab a protein bar for breakfast.  You will feel so much better.

  4. When I had to give up caffeine I tapered off.  I started by substituting 1/4 of my regular coffee with decaf (I did this for about a week).  Then I substituted 1/2 for a week and so on until I was only drinking decaf.

Start eating a healthy breakfast during this time and you wont feel run down.  Eat a protein and a carbohydrate for breakfast and it will give you a quick pick up and energy for the long hall.  Here are some quick examples:

    A yogurt based smoothie

    Toast and milk

    Toast with peanut butter

    cereal and milk

And when I am in a huge hurry I grab a granola bar and string cheese to eat on the way to wherever I am going.

You should be able to get the energy you need without caffeine from the good foods you eat.  An apple will give you the same caloric energy as a cup of coffee gives you caffeinated energy.

    Good Luck!

  5. no idea, i drink 3 cups of coffee every day and normally a can of redbull aswell, i can't get off it.

  6. mountain dew has the most cafiene

  7. coffee"s like cigaretts so hard to give up but allways drink alot of water to keep the system flush , and the best way is to cut down mix 50% decaf or start drinking Green tea

  8. try some herbal teas like rooibus or honeybush. Those are just a few.  Some other popular ones are chamomile and mint teas.  These all have no caffeine.

celestial seasonings has some great kinds since they used to specialize in herbal teas.
