A campaigner is claiming that the Shetlands are not part of Scotland.

Aren't the oil fields closer to shetland than mainland scotland?

  1. With the Kosovo precedent - there could be loads...

  2. End of Nations - EU Takeover & the Lisbon Treaty

  3. Maybe one less - who can pretend Northern Ireland is a country?  Its an area - it doesn't even have a name - it has a semi-accurate geographical location.

  4. even some in the population of the shetlands and the orkneys do no twant to be part of the UK.

  5. The Orkneys and Shetlands have never been part of Scotland.  They are a personal possession of the Scottish monarch in the same way that the Channel Islands are the personal possession of the Duke of Normandy.  Both titles are currently vested in our Queen.  If Scotland left the United Kingdom, there's no reason for the Orkneys and Shetlands to go with them.  They may prefer to remain part of the United Kingdom, or join up with Norway or Denmark.

Scotland's claim to the oil is pretty nebulous.  Much of it is landed in Scotland out of sheer convenience.  The way in which rights to the ocean floor are divided up by international law depends upon the sizes of the countries bordering the ocean.  If Scotland becomes independent, with or without the Orkneys and Shetlands, the oilfields will all revert to Norway.  Actually, there's not much left.

we are Nae all one Country we are 4 3 conquered to serve the one. who has consistently abused all of  us thought the years of occupation and oppression. i will nae ever be called a english or British, its an insult i don't call you Scot or Irish or Welsh. if your no one of them.

to me  any Scot who would call them self British over Scot should move south fast, sooner or later they will be advised to change their mind or leave

    to KORKY

i am a Scot i am NAE British,  We Scots are no a part of you and your fooking Westminster. England can go hang.

no insult intended !!  just don't call me names

    now your answer.

Aye there could be and maybe there should be. the Scots want out of the union.  it is england who has put the nation in this mess.  they can go into the EUski or no, i care nae a wee bit. i be itersetd in freedom. england has destroyed the union, now we want to get out before  their beloved Gordonski Brownakov has a chance to destroy us Scots.

if ye think Ireland was bad before their independence, wait till ye see wa we Scots can and will do

if the sheltlands want freedom  fine, wales too

  7. well just think of the benifit of separation , G Brown would be out of a job as he only has a westminster seat , we would both be rid of the sour faced self important non democratic dictator. yes non democratic , renaging on the eu referendum that affects the status of the westminster parliament , the denial of the people of scotland to decide self determination , so a thatcherite labour prime minister without a mandate from the british people has a hard neck to even have the audacity to even mention the word democracy . WAKEN UP BROWN you are NOT a PM, you are a numptie, oops that was a knock on the door most likley mi5 or one of the brownies to lock me up , anyway dont say i didnt warn you

  8. It should be up to the people, not the people who think they own us!

  9. Isle of Man,

    Wales,

    Scotland,

    Republic of Ireland,

    England (Britain),

    Northern Ireland?

  10. don't forget cornwall too.

that would make, 6? or 7 for the channel isles, or 8 with the isle of man....

  11. United we stand, Divided we fall,

unite and fight to get our freedom from Europe before splitting the UK,  and then decide if we need independent states, and the oil you keep talking about is British not Scottish or Shetlands,

Tartan Army,  best you change your aviator cause that sure looks like a British Army photo to me, and as you said you ain't British.

  12. There are people who think the westcountry shouldn't be part of England either (Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire, Berkshire as well as possibly including Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire) - these people are part of the Wessex regionalist party, as well of course as those who seek devolution for Cornwall. You could make a case for just about any part of the UK splitting off and forming its own country.

Mystical mamba is a bit mislead - the Isle of Man and the Channel Isles are not part of the UK anyway - they are crown dependancies (like Gibraltar). They are part of the British Isles (so is Ireland) but they have their own parliaments and no MPs in Westminster (unlike Scotland and Wales that have both).

However I could easily see England splitting into at least 3 parts - the south west, south east and the midlands and north; possibly even more than that (I doubt if it came down to it Lancashire and Yorkshire would stick together!) meaning we'd have 3 or more countries that were once England, Wales, mainland Scotland (possibly even highlands/lowlands split) the Shetlands and the Orkneys.

  13. Well we started out as a cluster of petty kingdoms waiting to be conquered by the Romans. Perhaps that's how some people wish to live their lives.

  14. The united Kingdom is all one country. Wasting time on this when we are fight terrorists is weakening the country.
